use the search function next time as this has been talked about alot... the problem with "portable" is that the screen is so tiny you dont lose or really gain any noticable quality compared to a dvd ... maybe to make some extra money they might bring these out but I doubt they'd be the new standard for "portable" players.

I'd say that it should have a HDMI output so you could hook it up to a HDTV, WIFI and an ethernet port, then the porti-player would make since. Also, I don't see Toshiba comin' out with a HD DUD player anytime soon, even though I heard that they were bringin' out one at CES but you all know what happened.

Don't listen to these nay-sayers.
1024x600 is being offered on a 7 inch UMPC so there's no excuse to not make a portable BD player. |

I have answered the old threads on this topic in depth. But he is asking WHEN and not "why none" as the other thread.
First, we need a complete victory for blu-ray. While the fat lady has sung the applause still lingers and the curtain has not dropped. Personally, it won't happen for me until I see Transformers in my hot little hands. ![]() The main issue is the technology is still young. DVD was a smaller technology to start and just got smaller as designers created more and more chips to replace the native components. Plus a design push to make a portable player had to come about. Everyone is saying you won't see the difference in a screen that small. I would say that is true for 1080p because the screens are typically 7 to 10 inches. A 480p screen on a portable blu-ray player is NOT acceptable. We buy it for being high definition. The problem will not be so much the shrinking of the components as it will be power consumption and making a small screen which supports 720p. In my opinion, anything more than that would make the player too expensive and have minimal return on the eye. But it SHOULD support 1080p with the HDMI output. Lithium Ion batteries are great but like all battery technology gets pushed beyond their capacity. Battery power is always too little too late. Consider yourself lucky if you watch any single 3 hour plus Lord of the Rings movie on a single charge. The newer silver batteries may be the answer. Most of the bulk in portable devices comes from batteries. The screen MUST be OLED to keep power consumption to a minimum. Making 720p screens of that size should be cheaper than conventional LCD. To answer your question, maybe in another year or two. But expect the first generation models to be EXPENSIVE and have design compromises. Last edited by tron3; 01-14-2008 at 03:22 PM. |

I'm going to make a firm guess that we will see the 1st portable BD player at CES 2009.
