Default 6 reasons why U should use your ps3 as a Blu-ray player

1- Fastest load time
2- Ability to play PS3 games
3- Up to date with downloadable firmware
4- Multi funtional / Media Center (music, photo, internet)
5- Internal decoding DTS-MA source (not have to worry about DTS-MA blowing out your speaker because the PS3 decoded the signal before sending it out to the receiver)
6- Better upscaller for DVD format.

If i miss any and i'm sure i did, please share it and i will update the list. I think overall this list is not as pathetic as the Cnet list wherea people have to see the True HD light up on their receiver. =)

I don't know that #2 is a valid reason why you should use your PS3 as a Blu-ray player though.

Oh man, and I was going to add that no. 7 could be that it can be a cup holder.

that is true in a way but also not true in a way. Having the ability to play PS3 games is like an added bonus, one of which the dedicated player doesn't offer

This is really a feature of the PS3, and not something I would use in my shopping criteria when looking for a Blu-ray player. Since I have no interest in "next gen" console gaming this feature is worthless to me.

Many standalone players can pull down their own firmware (BD-P1400 has an Ethernet port for this purpose). Updating the firmware via CD-R is also very simple and quick.

Granted, this is a nice integrated feature for the PS3, but I can do the same things about 5x better with my home theatre PC with a much more inviting interface (keyboard/mouse).

This was only a problem for RECEIVERS with certain DSP processing chips. The "DTS-HD MA bomb" could easily be avoided by any player simply by switching it to PCM output and disabling bitstream. Thankfully, receiver manufacturers have made DSP updates available to remedy this problem.

Incorrect. There are standalone Blu-ray and even DVD players that do upscaling loads better than the PS3. For the money, the PS3 does a fine job, but it's certainly not the best. As others have mentioned, the now-defunct Toshiba HD-A3 has a very capable upscaling chip and handles DVD media quite well.

wow... way to shit on his parade! lol

I thought it was valid but you do make good points as well sir

I will get rid of mine when better stand-alones come out (and hit the sub-$1,000 mark) I need something that has high quality CD and SACD playback.

I would never buy a ps3 as a blu ray player, think about it, the reason blu-ray won the format war was because millions of consoles were already in peoples home (nice move) so they just decided ohh why not throw in a redundant blu-ray drive into the ps3. Where as the stand alone player i.e. BDP S300 is an official blu-ray player. PS3 can kiss my ass, the console has to play games, and focus on playing blu-ray movies and its smaller than any standard blu ray player...it all stands to reason..use a ps3 for playing games, use a blu-ray player to play blu ray dics! plus for all u guys that have big fancy home theatre rooms with 60'' tv's dont cheap it up by using a ps3 please.

I'd replace #2 with "wireless" built-in since a lot of people don't have an internet connection in their home theater. So, the PS3 having wireless built-in ends up being a nice advantage.

Most high-end BD standalones to include high-end hd-dvds upconvert DVD's better than the PS3. All decent HTPC's upconvert better also.

So a better comparison would be a PS3 vs a HTPC right ?

I'm sorry Laddie, but your post makes little to no sense to me.

"the reason blu-ray won the format war was because millions of consoles were already in peoples home"

Wha? That's like saying "The future happened because the past was already making the future happen" Again - Wha?

"so they just decided ohh why not throw in a redundant blu-ray drive into the ps3."

Wha? There are not two Blu-ray drives. Check the meaning of 'Redundant'. What you said sounds alot like "Why put a CD player in something that plays CDs" (Pssst, the CD player IS what makes the device plays CD's. And magically enough, is the Blu-ray drive that allows the PS3 to play games on BD's AS WELL AS Movies on BD. Funny how that works)

"BDP S300 is an official blu-ray player"

A company that makes Blu-ray players must pay a licensing fee to use the technology and logos - Therefore ANY device that can play Blu-ray based media is an 'Official' Blu-ray player.

"PS3 can kiss my ass"

That's it's decision. I will not be joining the PS3 in that venture.

"it all stands to reason"

Um... what stands to reason? I was not aware there was "reason" being used.

"use a ps3 for playing games, use a blu-ray player to play blu ray dics!"

So if I have a pickup truck, should I use it for carrying people around or cargo? And if I'm only supposed to use it for cargo, am I violating the rules by driving it?

"plus for all u guys that have big fancy home theatre rooms with 60'' tv's dont cheap it up by using a ps3 please."

*Phew!!!* I only have a 27" CRT TV - the PS3 cost more than my TV set! So I guess I really "Expensived" it up by buying my PS3!

God I love silly posts.

Cheers, Doc.
