Default what i read in our local newspaper

so basically the HD and Bluray format war will never end. LG just made a player that plays both bluray and HD.

i dont understand why they want to have 2 formats??
do you think this will last?

The only thing that will prevent an end to the "war" is if Universal and Weinstein never support BD. The price of a dual-format player (licensing both formats rather than just one)- will prevent such from having any significant impact on the market for some time. And I have to wonder just how many units LG can sell considering you can buy both BD and HD standalones for less already. It's a shelf-space saver or convenience item at best.

Me neither. The Blu-ray format is the best. What they should have made is a good BD player under $500.

They would make a foolhardy decision like this strictly at their own peril.

Even now, ignoring BD is foolish and simply a bad business decision that is costing them money.

The argument that HD DVD supporters always use is that Disney, etc, are ignoring potential customers by not releasing HD DVD. The less than 200k owners of HD DVD drives are somehow supposed to represent a huge lost revenue.

By that same argument, Universal and other smaller HD DVD exclusives cannot ignore the approx 4 times larger insall base of Bluray players. And the number of BDs will grow faster with PS3 sales.

While movie attach rate to PS3 is up for debate, it would seem that the HD DVD exclusive studios have more potential income to lose than the BD exclusive studios.

^^ Your sig says it all.

In the end, 90 percent studio support and several major exclusive studios like Fox, MGM, Sony, and Disney are what's going to finish this thing off in 2007.

The fact is HD DVD will never have full industry support because of Sony alone. The ONLY chance of there ever being only one format, is with BD. And such is necessary if high def wants to see the same kind of market penetration as DVD. Fox/MGM, Buena Vista (Disney, Pixar, Dimension, Miramax, Hollywood, Touchstone), and Lions Gate know this and have indicated that, that is one of the reasons why they won't release on both formats, as it only serves to prolong the war and ultimately cripple sales and adoption. In the long run they stand to gain more by supporting only one format. And one format only may be key to getting some of the big guns from Lucas, Spielberg, and others released in high def. Not to mention the support of studios like Dreamworks and producers like Criterion and Anchor Bay.

A universal player could change that, taking away any need for any studio to release on more than one format. But only if the universal player costs no more than the cheapest standalone player. As long as the maker has to pay licensing for both platforms, that just isn't possible, especially when each format is willing to lose money on hardware to compete. But who knows. Maybe as a last dying hope, HD DVD will start giving away their stuff just to stay alive.

The PS3 is the only BD player which is HDMI 1.3 compliant and the 20GB version is $499. It plays just as good as the best of them, has a shorter loading time plus it'll play some amazing games soon. The only downside to it is that it doesn't upconvert DVDs.

I know it and didn't mean PS3 is not good enough. I'm just saying that the LG's BD player would probably be more successful if it were a good BD-only player under $500.

Personally I think it is a mistake to release a dual format machine. We need one format to come out on top so that the masses can more easily step up to HD movies.

So as soon as the Universal accountants start adding up their potential sales on BD against their actual sales on HD-DVD, the sooner the format war will be over.

It's as simple as that sadly; Universal sign up to Blu-Ray, and HD-DVD is gone.

In the meantime the blu-ray exclusive studios have to keep the pressure up by releasing AAA titles and making sure consumers know they are blu-ray only.

I believe that Europe could end up being the deciding region. PlayStation 3 launches in about 8 weeks, introducing the first mass market HD movie player to the entire region. Two days later Casino Royale is released, the most successful Bond movie ever.

It's a marketing dream come true! I'd bet that the number of PS3's sold in week one pretty much matches the number of BD Casino Royale's purchased, which should also lead to a new global sales record for an HD release.

Are you paying attention Universal?

I know people have pointed to this sign as an idication of sales before, but this is the first time I have bothered to check....I was in my local Best Buy yesterday and the Blu-ray section was picked to pieces. All the quality new releases were gone. Kingdom of Heaven nowhere to be seen. The HD-DVD racks were nice and neat. It looked like no one even cared. This thing will be over sooner than later. Once the wave of titles starts rolling out continuously I don't see how HD-DVD can recover.

No, it doesn't upconvert DVD's. Someone was talking about a firmware upgrade to fix this. I don't know if that will work but it would be nice.

Another bad thing is the PS2 games, they do not look good at the higher HDTV resolution. You need to choose a lower resolution in order to make them looks as good as when played on the PS2.

I still have my DVD player and PS2 so both are non-issues for me.
