Default Blu-ray and Black Bars

Why did I buy a wide screen tv If not to eliminate black bars? Why do some of these blu-ray movies still have black bars when I have a wide screen tv to fill? Are the movie studios just too lazy to make it fit the wide screen?

There are different aspect ratios for movies. The aspect ratio of your TV is 1:78:1.

1:85:1 movies fit your screen such as Aliens, The Terminator Lethal Weapon, Bridge to Teribithia ect.

2:35:1 movies do not fit your TV movies such as Alien, Terminator 2,3, Lethal Weapon 2,3,4 The Rock, and Transformers.

Because the studios didn't make the movie for your wide screen TV... they made it for the people at the theaters!

No, they made it that way so we can see the movies the way the movies were meant to be watched!

I recommend you read this thread:

If all movies were shot in 16 X 9 aspect ratio, there would be no black bars. But that has never, and never will be the case.

Most movies that I watch are wider than 16x9. Those movies are in 2.35:1 (scope) aspect ratio. 16x9 is 1.78:1 aspect ratio. So, 2.35:1 cannot fit to 1.78:1 without having black bars on the top and bottom. You can use the zoom button on your display to fit the scope picture to 16x9 display. If you do this, you will cut two sides of the movie. This is not a good way to watch a movie in my opinion. However, lot of people do this.

You may try and check. If you go in the zooming direction, you will have problems with subtitles of some movies (if you need subtitles). This subtitle problem of blu-ray has not been resolved yet.

An interesting discussion can be found in this thread as well. The first post gives some nice video examples that you ought to see which will help you to understand the problem.

Actually, a properly calibrated TV should show very slight black bars on the top and bottom during a 1:85 aspect ratio film.

Please use the search...this could be easily found. Black Bars are there because that is the way the director wanted it cropped.
