AKG makes great studio quality headphones and you can get a decent pair at GuitarCenter for not a lot of money.
I have heard that certain companies make (pseudo) surround headphones, but I wouldn't buy into that. You can trick someone's eyes with depth of field and 3d tricks, but the human auditory system is far too powerful to be "tricked" into thinking it's hearing surround. The bose 3.1 doesn't do it and I don't think those "surround" headphones can do it either. Surround is surround but stereo is STILL awesome, so check them out. I'm also going to try out those Sennheisers some time, so I'd like to thank Beta Man for that. Later man, Enjoy. |

I use Baracuda surround sound headphones for gaming. They are alright. I have also used some USB based ones that worked really well but i can't remember the brand name.
They quality of the sound is ok, at least for gaming. For movie watching, I don't know, never tried it. But for the best sound with them you have to get the Baracuda sound card as well. Good luck, I bet those Sennheisers are better for sound quality, but shop around. |

As for good STEREO Headphones I will very highly recommend the Sennheiser HD 280 PRO. They are not the most expensive HPs in the world, but I have found for Mics/Speakers/HPs Most expensive is NOT always the best, For most things in life it is, but not Mics/Speakers/HPs. I have tried and owned many overly expensive HPs in the past few years and the Senn. 280s are the flatest, most accurate, and unhyped HPs I've heard yet. They are the best for me... everyone hears differently so YMMV, but good luck in your search... Last edited by Sabian576; 04-22-2008 at 02:02 AM. |

I purchased the SONY MDR-V6's many years ago and dispite wear are still one of the best investments I ever made. Over the years I have seen this headphone in stills, movies, videos, in many serious mixer/studio shots etc.
The latest line in this series is the Sony MDR-7509HD, I would highly recommend these as a good research starting point. I paid something like $90 for the original pair and the latest come in at about $200 so not bad for the almost 20 years Ive had mine. Last edited by 1Fish2FishRedFishBlu; 04-21-2008 at 08:43 PM. |

Make sure you demo the Pioneer SE-DIR800C HDPH Dolby Digital 5.1 Wireless Headphones. I have a friend who swears by these.

I'm not sure what your budget is, but if you want an all around fantastic set go with the Ultrasone HFI-700's or HFI-650's (exactly the same just released in different countries). Trust me you will not be disappointed. Their S-Logic technology distributes the sound around your ear rather than directly into your canal. It creates more of an "open" surround experience. The HFI-780's are the newer replacement model. I don't have experience with those yet, but I'm sure they are just as good if not better.
I have owned TONS of different headphones over the years and these are by far the best. I use them for recording, listening to music on my PC and MP3 player, and watching movies. If you plan to use them with an MP3 player, I recommend picking up a portable amplifier such as the MiniBox-D. Most MP3 players cannot provide enough juice to properly drive these. A decent sound card or receiver will be more than enough though. Everything is extremely clear and the bass hits hard and tight. You will hear things in your music that you never heard before. P.S. Make sure to burn them in. The recommended period is 8 hours. I ran mine for 15 hours just to be sure. Here is a review: http://reviews.cnet.com/headphones/u...3.html?tag=txt |

It's probably true that there aren't any commercially available surround headphones that would work very well, but the technology does exist. At Disney's MGM studios in FL, they used to have this little exibit where you went in this little room and sat down and put headphones on. They would dim the lights and tell you to relax and close your eyes. Then they would play these audio passages, the one I remember the most was where you went in a barber shop and got a haircut. This is the most realistic sound I've ever heard, more so than even real speakers. The sound was so detailed, when the barber would snip at the hair, you heard thi scissors cut through hair like in real life, you could almost feel it. I haven't been there in years so I'm not sure if they still have that, but the sound from those headphones was amazing.
