Default Hd-umd (aka BLU-MD)

what storage capacity do you think you could fit on a UMD if it used blu ray technology. Basicly for the next PSP

Why did you title the thread that (Hdumb [I am assuming that you just misspelt it, I hope])?

I think he meant to mean HD-UMD which would not be a viable option because that would completely alienate any current PSP owner out there... now a HD-UMD PSP II could be cool

capcity of UMD = 1.8GiB = a little over a quarter of space of DVD 4.7
relative capacity of a HD-UMD (compared to a 25GiB BD) = 9.6GiB

technically, you could have uncompressed PS2 level graphics

I would imagine it could only be single layer due to the size restriction of the hardware, so prob around 5gb.

Which for that size would be some pretty impressive quality for a UMD movie.

I did not think of that. Thank you for pointing that out because I was a little worried.

UMD uses DVD technology to achieve 1.8GB of storage space. A dual layer DVD is 8.5GB, so its about 21% of a DVD. A dual layer Blu-ray holds 50GB, so a BLUMD would be 10.5GB. It would have a higher capacity than a DVD

Well...

You can get a good 720p AVC encode at about 10Mbps:

10Mbps = 1.25MBps = .00125GBps
10.5GB / .00125GBps = 8,400s
8,400s = 140m = 2h 20m

In otherwords... most full length movies.

theres no point in that, your eyes could see all the detail, now what it would be useful for is plugging into a tv, the new psp can do that. however, i am a little doubtful that the psp has the power to decode a 720p signal with decent audio. maybe im wrong. also, why wouldn't this idea just go the way of umd movies, i can see it for gaming, but not movies.

Sony, give us a PSP-2 with a 852x480 display and full PS2 emulation.

well as far as we've worked out a dual layer blu ray umd can hold 10.5 gbs of data this can hold most movies at 720p as someone earlier in the thread said it could also be used to create better than PS2 games but i was asking about the 720p screen cos obviously thats what it will go onto

acually the reason the reason the standard umd is only 1.8 gigs is coz dvd can only do two layers. if you have a 4 layer blUMD then you could get 21gb

They should just go with solid state and lose the discs altogether.

This is a really cool idea. Not sure it would pan out going by past failure of the UMD format.

Hmm. Would be interesting to see what Sony does to the PSP for the future.
