Default ps3 wont play my avi?

so, ive got a disc of avi files some over 2gbs (and if i remember a previous update allows avis larger than 2gb?) they're on a dual layer disc burnt at udf2.5

at first the ps3 showed everything on the disc as corrupted data, after trying to read the corrupted data it listed the names of all the files on the disc (battlestar galactica hdtv)

but when i try to play the files you can hear the ps3 trying to read the file, the screen will go black, the counter will come on, the speakers will hiss and than nothing

ive got no clue whats wrong with it :/ the disc was burnt perfectly using ImgBurn the files play if i try from my pc.. they're just simple avi files

another question what kind of subtitle files can the ps3 handle? .srt? and will it load those subtitles if the video file is a .mpg? (trying to see if converting the files into mpgs will get it to play)

It may matter which codec you used to encode the videos. Can you tell which codec you used?

Also, I have no CLUE about subtitles in video files.

First what video codec do they use, avi is not a codec and can be anything, avi can be early level divx, xvid etc etc or another large frame of codecs.

Avi is a container file, its a box nothing else... while it maybe possible for the ps3 to play the box, if it does not support the codec used inside the box then that is that.

Possibly think of re-encoding them to divx or mpeg2...

You may want to contact sony and ask them the specific codecs and profiles the ps3 can handle.

Even in the modern day of pcs I have spent weeks installing codec packs to find the one codec to run a file.. so I know how frustrating this can be, and sometimes its better just to re encode and safe yourself the hassle.

ah forgot to note, its .x264 in a avi container

another note, i just tried copying the file to my ps3 harddrive.. after doing so the ps3 will show the video playing in the thumbnail but when i tell it to play the file it'll just be a black screen and the counter wont move (even when pressing triangle and telling it to play from beginning)

right now im converting it into a .mpg and see if that'll work

Try converting it to mp4, or maybe just renaming it to mp4. I don't know about x264, but h264 works just fine. Not sure what the difference is though...

As far as I know, the PS3 won't accept x264/h264 (basically AVC) in avi. It has to be in an mp4 container. Also, I'm not sure if it's been updated since divx was added, but I'm pretty sure the PS3 won't accept anything but aac audio if the file was using the mp4 container. Divx on the other hand, can be in either avi or divx containers. Currently, you'd have to use the divx container and have the subtitles embedded in them in order for the PS3 to display the subs though.
