Default PS3 - revisited

I just noticed an update to a PS3 review on Ars Technica's blog.

"Back in the crazy days before the current generation of gaming consoles, the console you bought at retail was the console you had for the life of the hardware. My SNES acts exactly the same now as it did when it was first released, and outside of the addition of Xbox Live, the first Xbox system remained largely unchanged throughout the hardware's life cycle. Those days are long over, and now which version of Sony's PlayStation 3 that you bought is only one part of the equation: welcome to the firmware wars.

This is another take of an earlier, and not so glorious review of the PlayStation 3 system.

A nice review of the PS3s gaming, BD and other capabilities, with a bit of history thrown in for reference.

Sorry if this was posted already, but my search revealed nothing.

Ars Technica is anti-Microsoft in much of their mainstream computer coverage but clearly favored HD DVD in the format war. It made for some strange bedfellows.

Yes, I have seen that on several occasions. Overall, I do enjoy their reviews and tests.

With some exceptions (the obvious one noted), they are a very reputable and quality site.

At least they saw the light on the PS3

Not a bad review of the system and nice to see the jump in score. The PS3 has grown a lot so far and will continue to grow from the looks of it. I wonder if they will go back a third time in another year or two to say how the system is holding up.
