Atsushi Matsubara, Nikkei Market Access

In this article, we examined consumer expectations for standard next-generation DVD Blu-ray Disc by using Nikkei Market Access survey results.

First, we asked Japanese people how much they knew about Blu-ray. Graph 1 shows the results by gender. Among male respondents, those who said "I know it well" and "I know the name but I don't know its concrete specifications" accounted for slightly more than 40% of all respondents each. Combining these respondents, nearly 90% knew the name of Blu-ray Disc.

Among female respondents, on the other hand, more than 70% knew the name of Blu-ray Disc, combining slightly more than 10% that said "I know it well" and more than 60% that said "I know the name but I don't know its concrete specifications."

It can be said that the Blu-ray Disc name has penetrated considerably well in Japan.
