Default TiVo HD

I currently have a Time Warner HD DVR on a special offer but when this offer runs out I am cancelling it because I don't want to pay that much for it. Are there any experiences with the HD TiVos that may sway me in either direction?

I have two Tivo HDs and love them. All the extra Tivo features like Tivotogo, multi room viewing, online scheduling, suggestions, etc. I love to have. Multi room viewing is probably the one feature I could not live without.

Nice thread. I know nothing about TiVo but want one. I don't want to pay monthly as well. What is the deal with TiVos?

Do you have to pay monthly or what?

How much is it?

Is it available at Best Buy?

Oh, and is there different kinds of TiVo? The OP said TiVo HD so......

Please, I need answers.

You don't have to pay monthly, you can pay yearly, or lifetime. It is available at BBY. There are three differenct TiVos out. There is the standard TiVo. The HD TiVo. And the HD TiVo Series3 HD DVR which is THX certified. From what I understand you have to pay a subscription fee.

If I remember correctly, if you do not pay the subscription fee, you can only control live TV, like pausing and rewind. You can access what you already recorded if you had the service before, but cannot record anything new.

The price listed on the TiVo site is $8.31 - $12.95/month. When I left over a year ago, they said the price was going to $19.95. I guess they changed it back to $12.95. The $12.95 should be for the first box, additional boxes get a discount. There used to be a Lifetime Subscription (life time of the specific Tivo Box, not your account or service. Addition boxes, including if you upgrade to a new box, would have to pay the monthly or get a different lifetime subscription) that was $299 and I think it jumped to $399. They may not offer it anymore. They may have gotten rid of the yearly sub also. I cannot check because I no longer have an active box.

Default I recommend the Tivo Series 3

I was faced with a big decision more than a year ago when I wanted to upgrade to HDTV signals. At the time I was subscribed to standard DirecTV for almost $50/month. Getting the HDTV service would initially be cheap, but would cost more in the long run. Instead I chose to take down my dish (DirecTV doesn't remove it when you cancel service) and install a big antenna on my roof. I bought a Tivo Series 3 and signed up for 3 yrs of service for the price of two years. This was a big fee up front but it comes to less than $9 per month over 3 yrs.

Now I can't live without my Tivo. Not only does it deliver a great HD picture, but the menu, controls and features are awesome. I don't miss all the channels from DirecTV and I have plenty of HD content available to watch. Plus, I'm saving hundreds of dollars per year compared to keeping DirecTV.

Tivo was nice, but price wise, my cable service is the better deal. I do miss some of the nice features that Tivo had and I hope the rumor of Comcast and Tivo making a box together would finally come true. Tivo just operated better. It was not perfect, but better then what I have now.

TiVo HDs are great. We had a TiVo before going HD. We were tempted to get the TiVo HD, but opted for the cable's HD DVR. While I miss the simplicity of the TiVo, I don't miss having to pay for the service.

Now, my in-laws are a different story. I think they would have just hated having to learn the cable company's HD DVR, so we recommended that they upgrade to a TiVo HD when they got their HDTV. They're very happy with it. The only thing they had to contend with was the dumb cable guy who had no clue how to install and configure the dual cable cards that the TiVo HD needed. Once they got a competent person to help out from the cable company, they got it going.

I'm probably not going to go back to TiVo unless they go down in price, both for the device and the service.

Does anyone know if either the Cable company DVR or TIVO - can have their hard drive content copied to a standalone DVD recorder? I presently use the Panasonic with the built in hard drive - but it is slowly dying - and with none really available on the market (of this type) - I would need a TIVO-type hard drive to record on for ultimate copying to DVD.

Without a doubt Tivo HD Series 3 is the best DVR in the market. Bottom line all dvr have some kind a fee so it's best to pay the few extra dollars and get all the perks that go with TIVO

tivo to go
multi room viewing
expandable store space

and much much more....
