Why is the MGS4 Blu-ray capacity topic not allowed to be discussed on Blu-ray.com forum?

Kojima's statement was easily taken out of context due to the fact that his English is not up to par. He was speaking of the Dual-layer BD. There is not one single game that can fill a quad-layer BD (100GB). By the time Video Games exceed 100GB, the 200GB BD will be available. It's really all media Propaganda. Just ignore it. It changes weekly anyway. Let's see what they come up with next week. Maybe something like: Blu-ray is doomed because time travel will eventually prevail in the 4th dimension where resolution is 4320P. LOL __________________________________________________ ______________________________ Here's the article: (take it with a bucket of salt) Several big names may be going the Blu-ray way, but perhaps not all are satisfied with the decision. Konami’s video game designer Hideo Kojima is one such example. Apparently the 50GB Blu-ray is not enough for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, reported renowned gaming blog Kotaku. Speaking to Famitsu, Hideo Kojima stated, “For us, we are still not satisfied with the quality we can do. You know, there’s not capacity space.” The interviewer then asked Kojima if he was referring to the Blu-ray, to which the father of Metal Gear replied, “That is correct. There is not enough space at all. There is not enough space. We always talked about where to cut and what to compress.” Last edited by superdynamite; 03-05-2008 at 09:31 PM. |

Kojima is a God in the video game world. He reminds a lot like James Cameron. He doesn't make to many games, but when he does, they are incredible. Now this whole thing about there not being enough space on Blu for the game speaks volumes for the quality of the game and im extremely excited for it. Either that, or he is just trying to milk the hype as much as he can before it comes out.

Ongoing development of Blu-ray
Although the Blu-ray Disc specification has been finalized, engineers continue working to advance the technology. Quad-layer (100 GB) discs have been demonstrated on a drive with modified optics (TDK version) and standard unaltered optics ("Hitachi used a standard drive."). Hitachi stated that such a disc could be used to store 7 hours of 32 Mbit/s video (HDTV) or 3.5 hours of 64 Mbit/s video (Cinema 4K). Furthermore TDK announced in August 2006 that they have created a working experimental Blu-ray Disc capable of holding 200 GB of data on a single side, using six 33 GB data layers. Also behind closed doors at CES 2007, Ritek has revealed that they had successfully developed a High Definition optical disc process that extends the disc capacity to 10 layers. That increases the capacity of the discs to 250 GB. However, they noted that the major obstacle is that current reader and writer technology does not support the additional layers. JVC has developed a three layer technology that allows putting both standard-definition DVD data and HD data on a BD/DVD combo. If successfully commercialized, this would enable the consumer to purchase a disc which could be played on current DVD players, and reveal its HD version when played on a new BD player.[64] This hybrid disc does not appear to be ready for production and no titles have been announced that would utilize this disc structure. In January 2007, Hitachi showcased a 100 GB Blu-ray Disc, which consists of four layers containing 25 GB each. Unlike TDK and Panasonic's 100 GB discs, they claim this disc is readable on standard Blu-ray Disc drives that are currently in circulation, and it is believed that a firmware update is the only requirement to make it readable to current players and drives. |

And of course in the theater, resolution ALREADY exceeds the resolution you mentioned. In IMAX for example, the resolution can be 10Kx7K or "7000P" ... it would be many years before there are ever consumer display devices able to display at those resolutions. However, if you wanted to you could just go ahead and buy the projector equipment ... then you would need to roll out the dinero for the actual IMAX film ... it would be cost prohibitive to all but billionaires. It may be however that by the time these 4Kx2K or better displays gain mass consumer adoption, that there will be a new format adopted for those displays -- some holographic storage medium ... which may hold up to 1TB ... that's at least 15 years, most likely at least 20 years in the future though (assuming that the global economy keeps progressing of course; some predict we may end up regressing due to natural resource constraints) |
