um, tom cruise has been nominated for an oscar a few times. it's no mistake either. like the guy or not. he is a talented actor. whatever your hang ups are about him personally are YOUR hang ups. you should let it go. rent born on the fourth or july or even jerry maguire. the guy can act.

well that may be, but he can still act and do it much better than most actors out there. stallone anyone? though i think if we're picking actors that just plain suck, for me it would have to be daniel day lewis. though i freely admit that part of it is personally. he just makes my skin crawl.

yeh its pretty sad how people pre judge things. Cruise has been a brillant actor for decades now and as some cult classics (Top gun, A few good men) yet people just hate on him becuase of his private life. Who the hell cares what he does privatley hes not getting paid for that, hes getting paid for his acting and that what we should appercaite. People who say hes a bad actor are people who either just simply dislike him or people who simply dont know acting. The fact is Cruise is a weirdo, but he can act, and we watch him act, not do his personally stuff, god knows what we all do in our personal lives, leave the guy alone, he makes good flicks and his name is still very marketable. If it wasnt for Scientology people would still see him as a top actor.

This thread proves that there's no such thing as Separation of Church and State. People hear the name "Tom Cruise" and think of Scientology because you can't remove a person from their values. Religion gives people their values, and values determine a person's behavior.

But back to Tom Cruise, I dare anyone to watch him in "Eyes Wide Shut" or "Magnolia" and walk away thinking he's not brilliant in those.

Tom may be a good actor but I don't think he would play the part well enough. We need someone to replace Jim Carrey so....it won't be easy chosing the right actor.

A Few Good Men?! Tom Cruise has had many, many great roles. It is just too bad now that people cannot seperate his acting and movies, from his personal life. I hope he continues to make good films, because he has that potential.

I just really don't think he is that good of an actor. In every picture he plays you see him as "Tom Cruise" -- you never really see him as the screen persona. Really great actors, to me, are those that really make you believe they are the person they are playing in the film--with Tom you don't get this--you just get Tom. Early in his career he could get away with this when you didn't know who he really was--now no matter what he plays you see only him and never seem to get into his character.

Truly great actors loose their identity in that of their characters--look at the Peter O'Toole, Anthony Hopkins, or even Heath Leger types. They become the characters they play and you in the audience believe this too.

And one other point: Oscar nominations are more parts political vs. stand alone acting ability--i.e., who is "in" the Hollywood click. I have seen too many good acting performances not get nominated in favor of lesser performances by the "in vogue" Hollywood "A" list performers or owing to political considerations. Every great acting performance not nominated only means that a lesser performance is given undue recognition.

I own over 100 BD's and none have Tom Cruise--and I anticiapte none will ever make my collection. But remember, I think the same about Tom Hanks!!

i don't take any opinion seriously unless its supported by FACTS AND REASONING (eg. "in scene __ of movie __, cruise's character should have shown ____ emotion, and couldn't pull it off"); tougher to do, as it requires (1) you know what you're talking about, and (2) your opinion is opened up for criticism;
