Default BD player with 5.1 PCM out via analogue?

I am currently building a home theatre and am getting a JVC DLA-RS1 projector for video and have a decent 6.1 speaker set-up. I have an older but high end amplifier, a Yamaha DSP-AX1 which is capable of receiving up to 6.1 analogue input for example SACD's.

I am wondering if there is a BD player on the market which is capable of decoding DD True-HD and the DTS HD equivalent into PCM 5.1 (or even 6.1?) and then hooking that up to my old amplifier?

I have heard that some people have succeeded doing this whereas others are only able to receive stereo sound or experience odd things like the LFE channel disappearing.

So either I keep my old high end amplifier, which I would prefer to do and use a new, high-end BD player or I buy a newer but cheaper amplifier which supports Dolby True HD, DTS-HD, PCM, etc. and use a PS3 to play my BD discs (I hear the PS3 is a fairly decent player which I could also use for gaming).

Any idea on what I should do?

yeah the PS3 decodes DD true HD and DTS HD into PCM 5.1, but in order to effectively communicate that to your Yamaha, I believe you need an HDMI connection from the PS3 to the Yamaha, as optical cable can't support PCM. So if you're Yamaha doesn't have HDMI input then you'll probably need an HDMI receiver, like the Onkyo 605

I have heard however that it is possible to get PCM 5.1 from newer BD players. I don't intend to use a PS3 with my older amplifier anyway as I would then need HDMI which my amplifier dos not support. So my two options are:

PS3 and a new amplifier with HDMI support

or

Old Yamaha DSP AX-1 with a new BD-player that can decode and output 5.1 PCM successfuly from BD movies

LL86:

Due out in the fall of 2008, is the Sony BDP-S550 model which will internally decode both Dolby TrueHD and DTS master audio and send via the analog 5.1 outputs.

Damn, and I was hoping for a nice excuse to buy a PS3

Thanks for the info. Looks like my amplifier will still be good for another few years. I really didn't want to have to buy a new one seeing as this one cost me (or should I say us as it was my Dad who was doing the buying, I just "persuaded" him into getting the good stuff) about 1700 euros.

I will have a look around for a good BD player that can do this. I am assuming my amplifier will be able to play the PCM seeing if I switch the BD player to output analog and set my Yamaha into its "6 channel mode" which puts it into its SACD playing mode, sending the signals seperately to each speaker. In this case I will assume it will be 5.1 unless PCM is also available in a 6.1 surround mode? Will have to check the analogue in's at the back of my amp, it might only go up to 5.1.

Anyway, I should be set with this info, thanks very much!

Don't worry about 6 or 7.1, all movies are mixed 5.1 anyway, and any new 6.1/7.1 for home mixes are just having the processing to derive the surround rear done in the studio instead of in your reciever.

How about this: PS3 is the only BD player that also supports SACD (the 20, 60 and 80GB models, that is).

See PS3SACD.com

The new Sony player coming out this fall will also support SACD. If the PS3 had analogue output or if I was willing to buy a newer receiver I would go for the PS3 but I definitely don't want to ditch my Yamaha DSP-AX1. It's not the newest monster but it is still a flagship model and can certainly pack a punch with normal DD 5.1 and DTS. I am just crossing my fingers the PCM 5.1 via analogue will work, from what I have read and heard from people it should work but I am always pessimistic

I was wondering about this. Are you running 1.7 ?? Is this from the firmware updates downloadable to the CD-R - there were no "special" direct ethernet downloads to acquire this decoding function?

I have been searching high and low for this answer as if you pull up the most recent specs on the Samsung website, it does say the BD-P1400 has decoding capabilities for DTS-HD & Dolby True HD, but what I am hearing in a thread I started on this topic in this same forum is that it can only bitstream DTS-HD MA but internally decode everything else. Were you talking about getting DTS-HD HR or maybe I am just wrong and confused??

I had purchased mine back in December 2007 but was not sure it it applied to this model version. The good news is I got mine well after the first run came out and the BD-P1400 I have is also HDMI 1.3 compliant.

OK so now I go and find this:

* The player can decode DTS HD-MA and transmit it via Bitstream but it won't transmit it via PCM mode

Initially when I first turned blu was considering upgrading to a new A/V amp
with the latest trimmings DD Truhd,DTSHD Ma etc. Thanks to this forum I
got wonderful tips on how to enjoy the new HD audio and that's via the analoque 5.1 input present in my trusty old Onkyo TX-DS676.This model
have a 5.1 input and output connection.

So I just bought the Sharp BD-HP20A player and never look back since. It output DD Truhd,PCM 5.1(just love this audio format),DD+ and the older DD
and DTS sadly it won't output DTS HD MA but I am patient. Will probably
let the Sharp run for a year or so then do an upgrade.

You should stick with your Yamaha DSP-AX1 to enjoy bluray thru the 5.1 analoque input you won't regret it period

PS : My Onkyo 5.1 output is connected to the Forte FT1 5 channel power
amplifier and the LFE is from the Onkyo's sub pre-out. Some comments
on the LFE of PCM 5.1 lossless audio.LFE from this source sounded
smooth and less taunt then the older DD or DTS format without losing
it's basic function of providing good LFE. Just my 2cts.

Collectors-set,I am useing 1.7 firmware( which i downloaded then burnt to cd-r).I have a 3 year old denon avr which does not have hdmi and running it 5.1 analog.Iam also running it optical. When iam playing regular dvd's will set the blu-ray to bitsreem, set my reciever to auto then use all 7 speakers(and sub)and all my recievers modes for those movies(i do this once in a while so i can be able to use my backsurrounds). Now when i watch blu-ray disks i go into the blu-ray player and set it to PCM.I turn my reciever to ext-in(which is my 5.1 analog)I watched elton 60 in PCM 5.1(the sound was amazing)Ive watched across the universe in DD truehd,And the one that really blew my mind was the new alien vs preditour movie in dtshd.I don't know what i can tell you.Thats what i get and once you hear it you'll never turn back.Once you hear these codes, you'll know if your hearing them trust me!(really crisp and tight)thats the only way i can describe it.

Thanks so much for the response. Your listening experiences is what I was hoping/thinking I think I might just stay put for now and go with the 5.1 analog scenario as its pretty unbeatable for the codecs that can be internally handled by our BR player vs. forking out the cash for a receiver that can process all of the current codecs; it would be redundant and expensive.

The Onkyo would be a definate down grade from the OP's original amp. To the OP: You will have to wait for the Panny BD50 or you can get the Samsung 1500 and wait for the firmware update for DTS-HD Master support - both of these have analog outs. The other way would be building a HTPC and getting the Xonar HDAV 1.3 audio card (July) with the daughter card for analog out (you could do analog out from you onboard sound card but it will be downsampled to 48 bit /16 khz, but hey - they put Narnia out like that . Currently these are all of the solutions I know of.

The Samsung 1500 only has analog 2.0 outputs. He would need one with the internal decoder and 5.1 analog outs, correct?
