Default Oppo BDP-83 Decision

Alright... I've a got a PS3 Slim. I"m pretty happy with the blu ray player. That being said, I'm a musician and listen to music...alot! I've heard and read that the audio from the Oppo BDP-83 is pretty incredible. Plus the upscaling on regular DVDs is the best you can get.

So I'm trying to decide if I should make a Oppo BDP-83 purchase. I'm trying to justify the 500.00 to... upgrade...? Is it worth it? Is there that much of a difference...?

Unless you will be using it for SACD's, you probably won't hear enough difference with your current setup to justify the cost. No offence. I mean you have a really nice system, but it probably would not pick up on the difference as much as other systems may.

Additionally, the SE model will show more difference if you plan on using the analog outs of the Oppo. For HDMI audio, there will probably be no difference, depending on if you bitstream or LPCM the audio.

The audio improvements are for analog, not digital. With digital, the player is merely a transport and the AVR does all of the audio processing. So, your PS3 and the Oppo will produce the same outputs over HDMI.

While the Oppo BDP-83 is said to have a good analog output, it's hard to imagine it being better than a good receiver. It lacks any sort of room correction and the bass management tools are fairly limited. If the BDP-83 was so great over analog, there'd be no reason for a $900 SE model, whose sole purpose is improved analog audio.

Well, I may just invest in a better receiver then. If there isn't much of a difference between the audio via a HDMI connection... Then I'll just apply the 500.00 towards a receiver upgrade.

From your home theater, no, not really ideal to go for it. I could really go for it though, it has a few things I have been wanting .

BR looks the same?? Is a slim PS3 a better BR player then the fat PS3? I notice an obvious upgrade in PQ. I have the fat PS3 & the oppo83SE.. & with the right tweaks it delivers a noticeably better picture. Certainty not night & day better, but a upgrade IMO..

yeah...I agree...better receiver better quality you can get...but don't forget,if you want to know how the different detail sound via hdmi connection,I think you must added power amp,if the power only comes from receiver,I think they're not perfect sound,I doubt you can hear the difference between them...

agreed, you can ajust PQ for a slight improvement with the oppo. i usually leave all settings at zero.

I would do that. The Oppo is amazing don't get me wrong, but like others have said while it does so many things well the difference isn't so drastic that you should replace a perfectly good player I have noticed upgrades in dvd quality, but while there may be upgrades in PQ in blu-rays I can't see it...

Players we have and I have used:
1. BDP-S1
2. PS3 Fat 60gb's x2
3. DMP-BD80
4. Oppo-83 SE
5. BDP-S350
6. BD-C6500 (just got it today so haven't spent enough time with it)
7. BD-HP21U
8. Pioneer Elite can't remember which one.

The OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc player supports bit-stream output of Dolby TrueHD via its HDMI 1.3 output. It can also internally decode Dolby TrueHD and output via HDMI or the 7.1ch analog audio output terminals. With accurate digital output and high fidelity decoding, the OPPO Blu-ray Disc player represents the state of art in deliverying Dolby TrueHD audio.
