Solid/Old Snake's Backstory? (Spoiler)

I'm not too familiar with the previous stories of Metal Gear Solid.

About his aging, I know as much as how he's a clone of Big Boss or something, and Solid has a twin, Liquid Snake.

So is his aging due to that Foxdie virus? and is there more to the story?
Also, does MGS4 story start off from part 3 or part 2?

MGS 4 is a direct sequal to Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.

Choronlogically Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is the very first chapter in a 7 chapter series (Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is the order of the series).

Both Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 are important to Metal Gear Solid 4.
