Default 2 channel uncompressed through headphones.

Would I need to use a HDMI cable to get 2 channel uncompressed PCM through my headphones?

But HDMI would be best, correct? My receiver doesn't pass audio through HDMI.. Thinking of buying a receiver that supports audio over HDMI & a player that decodes the HD formats.. Then I will get the best audio BR has to offer? At least with 2 channels..

So I can experience uncompressed PCM with optical? 2 channel that is? Would that include True HD in 2 channel? & the other HD codecs in regards to 2 channel play back..If so, you saved me a lot of money..

yes, two channel over Optical would be identical to HDMI two channel. Enjoy.

Would you have to buy some insanely expensive headphones?

No.. But what is overly expensive to you.. I do need to get a receiver that supports audio over HDMI so I can get 2 channel True HD, D plus, & DTS master.. I'm looking at getting the Sony 720, for around 200.00 hopefully.. I'm using 500-700 headphones, but any good headphone will do..
