Default Google buys Motorola for $12.5bn

Wow!

After years of fighting the smart phone wars by proxy, Google (GOOG-Q) is arming itself with an arsenal of patents and stepping directly onto the battlefield.

In what will be the largest acquisition in company history, the web search giant is buying Motorola Mobility (MMI-N) for $12.5-billion (U.S.), or a 63 per cent premium over the company's Friday closing share price. The purchase is aimed at solving several serious problems Google is facing in the smart phone industry, where its Android operating system is the most popular platform but is fragmented over almost 40 different device manufacturers.

Crazy that they need to spend that kind of money for the main purpose of "defending" themselves. Although having a hardware backing for Android is probably a bigger reason.

I wonder if this means that Android is going to be only on there phones at some point in the future. Maybe signing a big contract with Sprint or someone else to rival the Apple/AT&T alliance.

They're all just immature and are starting to piss me off. I just might grow up to be a troll....a patent troll.

Actually, that's not half patent. I'm patenting porn!

To be honest, this is like what Comcast did when it bought out NBC-Universal. It's just cheaper to buy than to go through all the red tape. It's almost like paying for a rooted phone then going through all the shizzles.

This is interesting. So will all Motorola smart phones now be Android only, or will others pay Google to put their OS on Motorola phones?

This news doesn't excite me in the slightest. I've never been impressed with Motorola and this probably won't change it. I admit that Google's Nexus phones usually set bars, but if the next Nexus after the Nexus Prime is a Motorola, then I won't be buying it. Samsung or HTC, thats it.

I think Motorola went Android exclusive for their phones a few years back? If not you're probably right that they'll go that route now.

The article I read said this might stir some companies to improve their support (seriously I will never buy another Samsung phone). Motorola phones could potentially get much better in terms of updates/firmware because of this and the article is hoping that in turn will force other companies to follow suit.
Of course, Google owning the hardware is only half the battle, they still need to work with service providers to get updates out...

I wasn't aware of that, but I haven't been keeping up so I don't doubt it.
