So they start the trend. Other companies follow their example. Now, they quit doing it. That must make the other companies look like fools.

Microtransactions probably generate more revenue, but only when gamer is online. Hence, elimination of paid online acceess.

Wonder what this means for older games that require it.

I believe that they will still have it implemented on those games so long as those servers remain activate. Once the servers are taken down (as almost all EA servers do), there is no ability to play online play anyways. Therefore, no need for the online pass to work should someone try entering the code.

BE CAREFUL HOW YOU READ THIS NEWS THOUGH PEOPLE!!! EA says nothing about their SEASON PASS program. Remember that there is a distinct difference between the two as they currently exist. ONLINE PASS = free online multiplayer, available for free with every factory sealed copy of a game. SEASON PASS = added content and special privileges for 1 year at an additional cost to the user should they choose to participate. So, I have a feeling that they are doing this as an interim step towards incorporating the two programs. Thus, eventually, they will say "as part of the SEASON PASS subscription you will be able to play the games online." And this will cost the user extra. From the corporate perspective, it makes sense that they try to do this to get all of their die-hard fans to have to generate extra revenue for them. From the consumer perspective, it is a really idiotic move on their part... but do they really care??? Probably. But, not enough to try and see if it could actually work.

I really cannot see studios insisting upon season passes for online gameplay, for one I don't think the console manufacturer would allow it, the fan base would be up in arms. To have to pay for the game, online subsription and then season pass would be totally ridiculous

Please provide one shred of evidence for this. Something, anything, or is this as I suspect just pure wild speculation?

Really this reads more as a poor attempt at EA hate, simply because EA is EA.

Microsoft gets away with charging to be able to play online on the 360, this wouldn't be any more unreasonable (both however are extremely unreasonable). There however is no evidence to believe that this is EA's plan, just wild speculation which is worthless.

You read me entirely wrong.

First, I clearly state my opinion as mere speculation by using the words, "I have a feeling..." I never realized that having a feeling suggested hard evidence. At no point did I insinuate that there is, or ever was, any proof to substantiate anything I said. This speculation, however, is based on observed business practices within the industry over the course of this last generation of gaming. These companies are making some rather strange decisions that haven't affected us users terribly strongly... yet. But, they've been heading that way with launch day DLC content and ridiculous "unlock by paying" strategies.

Second, I haven't a single issue with EA as a company. I enjoy their games when I only have to pay the purchase price.

Well, based on your very own post here about Microsoft's online gaming revenue strategy in conjunction with the news of EA online passes becoming extinct sort of slides the entire scenario out of the "wild speculation" category that you are so insistent upon and slides it into more of a "logical possibility" category.

As i'm sure you know we actually already have pay to play games even once you have bought the game (many mmo's), unless people are getting added value out of it they quickly unsubscribe. EA knows this all to well after The Old Republic, hence why I think your comment lacks anything worthwhile. What you are suggesting is different but not drastically so. If anything is to come out of this at the very worst (based on comments by EA spokespeople and such things like Dead Space 3) we shall be seeing a shift to more micro-transactions as apposed to online passes. BTW I don't mean this as an attack on you or anything along those lines, just trying to point out what I see as flaws in your statement (plus the amount of absurd ea hate is massive, I have even come across people complaining about EA donating money to charities).

Also EA and Microsoft are not related therefore Microsoft's online gaming revenue strategy does nothing to slide what you are saying out of the wild speculation category.

That is the point of a forum is it not? A meeting or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged....

I don't see why anyone would be excited about this, it just means that EA has come up with a better way to screw the consumer.

Exactly what I was thinking. If EA is getting rid of them, then something worse is probably coming down the line.

The only game I play online is Madden. So how does this affect me? What is microtransaction?

Perhaps it's this constant undying hatred and belief in EA conspiracy that guides my feeling as described above. Even though I have nothing against the company personally, being exposed to this mentality so repeatedly could be playing a role in my predictions.

Go onto the PS Store, look up the Madden page, and check out the ADD-ON section. $0.50 for a special jersey, $1.99 to unlock content that is already in the game, $0.99 for special cleats for your quarterback that make him run faster, $1.49 for a glove that gives your wide receiver a 10% increased catch success rate...

microtransactions examplified

P.S. Those examples are completely made up. Those are not reflective of actual content available for Madden on the PS Store.

If EA is bad, then Sony is pure evil. Just look up LittleBig Planet.

Hahaha no.

Most of LBP dlc is cosmetic. There are a couple level add-ons and miscellaneous stuff, but they aren't released Day 1, aren't overpriced and don't provide an advantage to those who bought it.

Go look at Tiger Woods 13/14 DLC to see insanity. It's straight up withheld content from the final release. And if I recall, TW13 released with $200+ of DLC on day 1. (I might be wrong on the exact amount, but it was pretty ridiculous).

I'm not a huge EA hater, but comparing LBP to EA's approach is just laughable. LBP is mostly cosmetic like Team Fortress hats. It's not a lot of withheld content, upgrades, buffs, etc.
