Default SACD capability

Wht oh why will none of the new Blu-ray players play SACD?
Even Sony, who invented the format, has not built the cpability into the newly announced 2008 players.
It's ironic that the only Blu-ray capable player that plays SACD discs is the PS3. Go figure!.

I would love to be able to get rid of my Oppo DVD player, that acts as my SACD player. But I'm afraid that the PS3 80's replacement may axe that ability, too. Sigh.

From what I've heard, Pioneer and Denon should have SACD/DVD-A playback functionality in players released in late this year. Of course those players haven't been oficially announced yet, so the specs could still change.

According to Afterdawn the two new Sony players will support SACD.

The BDP-S350 and BDP-S550.

http://www.afterdawn.com/hardware/pr.../sony_bdp-s350

Unfortunately they will no doubt stay away from DVD-Audio.

Interesting,

That 350 has 5.1 analog output too. If it really does SACD I may want to pick one up. My AVR is nice but doesn't decode all the latest HDMedia formats and it's 5.1 analog input is currently used by my SACD player. I wonder if I could trade my PS3 for one (later on after it's released and stuff.)

Should I hold out hope for the Pioneer Elite supporting both? I wouldn't mind replacing my current transport.

Better sound quality than a PS3 will ever give you.

Beta,

Interesting... But,.. I've only got 1 SACD,..so,.. it's aint worth the $900 to get a little bit better sound from it.

Come to think of it,.. in my HT,.. that player may indeed sound no better then my current SACD player (which is not my PS3.)

EDIT - Hey,.. Just noticed that player doesn't even playback 5.1 SACD's only stereo playback. Wow, that's severely gimped. The PS3 and my other SACD player both playback the 5.1 mixes and sound great. Since that player can't even play them back then it's fair to say that at least with that portion of the disc you get much nicer sound from a PS3.

I doubt if Pioneer would ever release that "universal" player. However, I'd like to be proven wrong. Until then I'll make do with my 95FD and 58AV combo.

Unfortunately it's stereo only and most of the SACD's I listen to are multi-channel, which is one of the main reasons I like the format.

I have no doubt it's coming. All their Elite DVD players have been SACD/DVD-Audio players for several years now, so I don't think it'll be too long before an Elite Blu-ray with both SACD and DVD-Audio hits the market. Word is Denon will add SACD support to their next Blu-ray player, which no doubt means it'll support DVD-Audio as well.

I was going to consider the Mac SACD player, but if Denon or Pioneer come out with a universal- I might go for that.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I did search first..
Does anyone have any concrete info on the new 08 players that will support SACD? I saw that maybe the new Sony's will. Does anyone have any confirmation info they can give me.

I too would love to know the answer to this. If the Sony's do, then I am sold.

Unfortunately, no.
I spoke with Sony tech support today, and was told the S350 and S550 will NOT support SACD ... what a shame!
They would say only that the players were due out "before October".
No sense in waiting now, I am going to buy the Panny BD50!

I don't think it will die, I think it will end up with a niche similar to vinyl.

Just visited an SACD specialty store in Akihabara Sunday to pick up a few titles. I was in the store when the little "event" occured out in the street about 500 feet away.

Anyway, they had hundreds of titles, but they were far and away dominated by classical, and to some extent jazz.

Still, about twice the price and 2-channel only; and if you are doing the D/A conversion in your receiver (as I generally do, only exception is that sometimes I'll let my Sony SCD-1 do it with my RX-Z11 in "Pure Direct" mode) sound differences shouldn't be an issue. The Marantz looks like a nice unit, but it really isn't in the same market as a PS3, now is it? Also, my 40 GB PS3 doesn't play SACDs at all. For my collection of multi-channel SACDs I usually use my Oppo DV-980H player. It outputs the DSD signal over HDMI which gets decoded/processed in the Z11.

Although if you're processing it, it will convert it to PCM.
If you have it in the STRAIGHT mode you get DSD converted directly to analog from those beautiful PCM1792 DAC's.

Je suis tres envious. I think the 980H is an excellent transport for DSD especially when matched with the RX-Z11 or 5308CI, etc.
