Another great movie not on Blu-Ray....and the DVD was released in 1999 with no later (improved) editions. This is, IMO, one of the finest movies of the 90's with great performances and story.
It appears, except for some of his "spoofy" efforts like Piranha, none of Sayles' work has been released on blu. I know I've seen Lone Star, Honeydripper, and Silver City on HDNet, Sony Movie Channel, etc but so far nothing on Blu-Ray. I know these would be niche titles, but would be perfect for Criterion, Shout Factory, Olive, or Twilight Time. I'd buy Lone Star on Blu in a heartbeat...... |

Best bet is Warner Archive...shoot them a question about it on facebook, and maybe it'll turn out it's in the works or that WHV is going to do it themselves. |

Although it's been a while since I thought one of his new films was strong, IMO Sayles ranks among the greats of American independent film based on the strength of his great runs in the 80s and 90s--and Lone Star is one of his best works. Would love to revisit it on blu.
Matewan, Limbo, Brother From Another Planet, Eight Men Out, and Return of the Secaucus 7 are all provocative, interesting, and important films IMO. Sayles is also a trailblazing figure for finding ways to get a prolific body of personal, handmade films financed and distributed a half-generation before the explosion of U.S. indie came in the form of breakthrough films from names like Jim Jarmusch, Spike Lee, Richard Linklater, Soderbergh, etc. |

The DVD is significantly windowboxed, jaggy, blocky, EE and only in stereo. Great film, long overdue a remaster and input from Sayles.

With Warner Bros. licensing some titles now (Criterion got Badlands and Shout Factory is planning Nightbreed for next year), I think Criterion could get this one. It seems like a perfect title for them.
Also, Criterion could get access to some of Sayles' titles if they wanted to due to their deal with IFC (IFC currently holds the rights to a few of Sayles's films, such as Return of the Secaucus Seven and The Brother from Another Planet). |
