I wish all movies would come out in 1:78:1 because personally I dont care for the black bars even though youre not loosing any of the picture. just want my whole screen filled!

Indeed 16:9 is 1.77:1. So when studios have a 1.85:1 movie, they either not touch the frame and leave thin black bars at the top and bottom, or open slightly the frame to make the image 1.77:1 (this is what Warner does, for instance).

On the assumption that this is actually a serious post, how can you call yourself a home theatre addict and not advocate OAR?

While I can't imagine anyone finding the narrow letterboxing of a 1.85 film very objectionable on a 1.78 display (typical overscanning will hide 1.85 letterboxing; it's recommended that displays overscan 2-3 percent for broadcast sources and it's sometimes necessary with DVD/BD), I can see why 2.35 films might bother some with very small displays.
Most digital displays I've seen and some players incorporate aspect adjustments (sometimes called zoom, wide, or picture modes) just for the elimination of letterboxing for those that don't mind sacrificing part of the story for the sake of filling their screen. There are outboard processors that are even more flexible and proficient at image placement and sizing as well. |
