Default 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio with 5.1 setup???

Hello All,

I'm thinking about upgrading from my beloved Yamaha HTR-5660 to an Onkyo 606, for the main reason of being able to play uncompressed audio.

My Blu-Ray player is currently a PS3. My current setup is 5.1, and I don't have enough room to put another 2 speakers, to make a complete 7.1 home theatre.

So, I pre-ordered Rambo on blu, which has the following audio tracks:
English: DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1
English: Dolby Digital 5.1 EX

If I did have the Onkyo 606 setup, with only 5.1 speakers, will it sound weird trying to play the master audio 7.1 track?? Or does the receiver downmix it so that uncompressed audio comes out of the 5.1 setup?

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

itll be fine. you can select the output of 5.1 instead of 7.1. some dts ma only output from the ps3 as 5.1 anyway. it will not sound weird.

Agreed, it will mostly be (only) ambient sound anyway.

Not a whole lot of action is happening back there.

If you have it, it can be really nice at time, but if you don't, you will not miss too too much. You can still get really great imaging in 5.1

Pirates III is 5.1 pcm and sounds completely sick.

Enjoy,

He's right, it will not sound weird at all, it'll sound like normal, uncompressed 5.1.

I kinda had the same question. I was watching semi-pro blu-ray on my ps3. The ps3 says it is sending 7.1 DTS HD MA to my Onkyo 705 via linear pcm. I only have a 5.1 setup. So I am hoping that I am not losing anything except the rear two channels that I already know I would be missing.
