I bought an 806 last week. In my limted experimentation so far, I tried using the THX Ultra settings with Blu-Ray DTS MA and PCM movies and I thought it sounded great. I flipped between just the DTS MA settings and then added the THX settings and I thought it made everything come alive even more. It matrixed in my 2 back channels on the 5.1 feed from DTS MA
I was curious how many of you all use any extra "enhancements" when using any lossless codecs? So far I like it but I'm not done messing around yet. Between business trips and kids' naps my time has been limted. Thanks |

I do not use them either. It always interests me that people often talk about wanting "bit for bit" identical decoding (lossless CODECs) then turn around and distort the results.

i think thats kinda the point with hd audio. but i do sometimes use matrixing for dd, pro logic or stereo. it really depends on the source and what kind of results i can get.

I'm all for bit for bit... I'm just seeing what the receiver has to offer.
I have a 7.1 set up now and I'm just trying to max out the sound. I like big sound. My HT is a decent sized bonus room (above 2-car garage) but the sound can still sound "small" compared to the large feel of a real theater. When the 7.1 is added in (albeit a faked THX setting) it sounded bigger. It didn't change any of the front level sound (L/C/R and sub). Casino Royale sounded even more impressive during the Madagascar scene with the wheel loader and welding tank explosion. It sounded great as standard PCM as well. Edit: Talking Blu-ray here... the intensity of the sound and the fidelity are still above and beyond using the same THX settings for lossy tracks. The PCM-DTSMA-TrueHD tracks still blow standard away even if using THX I will say that the EQ seemed muddier when adding Dolby Pro Logic IIx and not as spatial. The only one I would consider using at this point are the THX settings. Last edited by PNKLoud; 01-20-2009 at 06:13 PM. |

I prefer to keep the PS3 PCM output on the Multichannel setting. With my Panasonic DMP-BD35 I keep things at the default DTS-HD settings. However, I also have 7.1 so for 5.1 movies I prefer the Dolby Pro Logic IIx - Movie with audio output on both units.

Like you said it dosen't change any of the fronts and it was more impressive during certain scenes. From what you said that is the reason I use it, from the front 3 it's still bit for bit and even the surrounds. It just more of an ambient/strengthen sound from the rears that feel the room more. |
