Default Backing up files from a dead PS3

Hi!
My 60 GB PS3 just died yesterday 1 month after the warranty expires. :S
No power will go through anymore, no light coming up and my MGS4 is stuck inside. It happened while I was playing MGS4, the PS3 just shut down during a cut scene. Now I need to pay 169$ to get it fixed or have a refurbished unit.

Do you know a way to backup the data on the hard drive before sending it to Sony? Can I put the HDD into a friend's PS3 and then backup the data to an external HDD?

Thanks!

The game I believe you might be able to just shake it out of there. It happened to me once when my nephew put two games in there and I just shook it upside down and it came out no problem. As far as putting a hard drive in another PS3 it might work if it is exactly the same model#, but I don't know since I have never attempted it myself.

If you put your old HD in another PS3 it'll just ask you to reformat it so that's not a possibility for backing up your files. Believe me, I know. My first launch-era 60 died in 2 weeks with my copy of FF12 inside. EBgames was nice enough to give me a replacement unit and let me have a crack at swapping the HDs. When I did so it just asked to reformat the old disk even though it was already formatted properly by the old unit.

One thing you can do is take out the HD and plunk it in a 3.5 HD enclosure and see if you can access the data with a PC or another PS3 that way. When I got my second 60 I decided to just swap in a 100GB HD right away and kept the old one in an enclosure and I now use it for backing up my files in case I have another problem.
