Default Directors going with 1.85:1?

Do you think with the mainstreaming of HDTV's and the complaint of ignorant consumers thinking that just because it takes up more of the screen that 1.85:1 is a better aspect ratio that studios might pressure directors into choosing that AR? There's no indication that they are but it could happen.

If it didn't happen 40 years ago, 10 years ago, no, it's not going to happen

I suspect that the studios know that "ignorant customers" will still buy their product. Direct to video may move to 1.85, but I doubt we'll see any changes in the theatres.

Exactly.

There are still some directors out there that consider film an art and will use the canvas and tools that best allow them to produce that art whether it is 2.35:1 vs 1.85:1 or digital vs analog film.

The reason I ask is because I've noticed that Sony has been advertising their movies on tv in 1.85:1 but noticed that Vantage Point and Hancock were 2.4:1. Not a director's decision, probably a studios, but no doubt, it has not so much as pleased tv-watchers but at least got them thinking one thing while the truth was something else.

Trailers for TV are rarely meant to be shown with the correct AR. You can't look at that and make a judgment as to how the studios want their films to look like. If they dictate AR, they might as well get out of the whole movie making business.

TDK's marketing on TV has all been in the correct AR, but then again Chris Nolan is awesome and uncompromising when it comes to his use of 2:4:1 and WB gave him full control.

Thank god. I love and prefer 2.35:1 in most cases.
