Has anyone noticed that there is a delay of 5 - 10 seconds after pressing stop for the movie to actually stop with Paramount titles? I've noticed it with Red October, Patriot Games, and Sum of All Fears. I use a Panny DMP-BD30K

I noticed it using my sharp player and the jack ryan titles. After stop and/or eject, a few seconds are needed before stopping (or ejecting) the disc.

No. The Warner ones don't just BDJ, so players can "naturally" resume where left off, just like most DVD players can do so with DVDs and have been able to do so for considerable time. This is because the player only has to store a few variables in it's internal storage to resume - basically the various language options and the current playing head position. With BDJ the whole of the virtual machine's code including each variable's state would have to be dumped to storage.
Try stopping and resuming a Fox release like Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer which uses BDJ and you won't be able to, even on a PS3, because the BDJ application is an extra level that stops the player directly addressing the disc, and no facility for resume play or "status dumping" has been incorporated. Superbad (if its like Walk Hard, both by Sony) will actively ask you if you want to resume or not when next played, and it is part of the BDJ wrap-around application/virtual machine. A process is invoked on stop/eject which automatically bookmarks the position unprompted. Early Paramount titles (before they briefly went HD DVD exclusive) didn't use BDJ, so could be resumed "naturally". I've only got Cloverfield since Paramount's return, but judging by the features on it, I'm assuming it's Java based, so probably all new Paramount titles are. I've not actually done much with Cloverfield other than a brief click around in one short session exploring the disc, so I can't say if the resume handling is present or not. |
