Default Wanted 2 in the works

Variety says that Universal Pictures has reupped Wanted producer Marc Platt for five years, keeping Marc Platt Productions on the lot through late 2012.

The deal comes as Platt begins work on Wanted 2 with director Timur Bekmambetov and writers Michael Brandt and Derek Haas.

For Wanted 2, Platt acknowledged that the creative team is still working on the challenge of continuing the story after most of the principal characters ended the original in no position for an encore. But the film was designed as a potential franchise, Universal production president Donna Langley said. The intention is to get James McAvoy back.

"The writers are at work already, and those creative discussions are taking place," said Platt, who is producing once again with Jim Lemley.

That duo also is teamed with Bekmambetov on a Universal adaptation of the Christian Gossett sci-fi graphic novel The Red Star, which has a script draft by Matthew Sand.

Platt also just set up a remake of the 1973 rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, and Platt and the studio are taking formative steps toward a screen adaptation of "Wicked," the stage musical that Universal co-finances and Platt produces with David Stone. Book writer Winnie Holzman will write the script.

As great as Wanted was I find it humorous that they intend to make a sequel based on the outcome of the first movie. Makes me wonder if they even took that into consideration.

Why a Wanted 2?..the first one was TERRIBLE!

McAvoy in Wanted = horrific
McAvoy in The Last King of Scotland = unforgetable

I thought he was pretty kick ass in Wanted. Never seen the other film. But I should check it out. Wanted is probably my favorite action movie of the year so far. Hellboy 2 is right behind that.

these studios really don't know what to do with their money......give it to the poor, instead of making crap after crap.

i echo the sentiments that wanted is kick ass. it's probably in my top five movies of the year. it's the best action film out and the best one since live free or die hard. it's also in the top of my list for comic book adaptions. it's definitely in the top ten at least. wanted was fantastic. the kind of summer movies hollywood used to make. keep them coming i say.

It's at $176 million worldwide (it only cost $75 million to make) according to box office guru.

Believe it or not, studios like making money off of movies. If part 1 of something is a hit, expect a part 2.

Here's whats I think is ingenious about this movie. They write a part specifically for Jolie and then Universal signs Jolie to the movie knowing there's not a chance in hell it would earn the amount of money it has without an A-List actor. Now that the movie has received positive reviews and made a decent amount of money they probably won't need Jolie or another A-list actor in the sequel to carry it to the box office.

Holy Shit!

Hollywood is a business?

You'd never know it watching some of the statements listed on here, I mean just because one moron in his parents basement thinks that a movie sucked then Hollywood should throw themselves collectively on their swords and never make another movie.

yeesh.

Best post ever. Where the hell would we all complain about movies if the internet was never invented? I thought wanted was great cannot wait for the sequel.

I liked Wanted....the action was a little over the top but in all its a good summer action movie.

Its easy to continue...just pick up where the first one left off.

They should just do a prequel with Angelina Jolie. I doubt they can sell a sequel without her name in it

Hey man, I've done my fair share of complaining about Uwe Boll movies, and I haven't seen Wanted yet I'll admit.

However, they made it for X amount, and if X is less than Y {what they made gross} then you can bet money on the fact that they're going to make a sequel.

I mean seriously, how much complaining does Michael Bay get and how many people are going to be lined up first day to see Transformers 2?

You've heard of the "Monday morning" sequel?
Meet its new-generation version, the "Thursday night" sequel:

In which studios hypnotize themselves on their own publicity that it'll be one of the Big Players of the summer (and already plan for "Smash video sales with the action audience" if it doesn't), they believe it already is a hit BEFORE it's physically opened in theaters...

...In other news, no current "Speed Racer" sequel plans.
And Dean Devlin has publicly renounced his original plans to turn "Godzilla" into a trilogy, and no new replacement has been found for Ice Cube in any "xXx: State of the Union" followup.

Ya just never know for sure what will happen.

If a movie like this is already set up for a follow up, I'd say it is good news.

Seriously, Wanted is an over the top action flick with poor CGI and bad acting. I wish they didn't make a first one to begin with.
