Default New member here with bdp-s1

A new member here and I wanted to say hi. I just got my sony bdp-s1 yesterday and it is a beauty to look at. I hooked it up to my sony tv via hmdi cable to try it out. Using the included blu-ray disc the picture quality is fantastic! Unbelievable color and picture detail. I next put in a dvd-r in order to test the upscaling feature. Again the picture is fantastic, not quite as good as the blu-ray, but still great. I watched about 75% of the movie and then had to quit. This morning I tried to watch the last part of the movie and the player has locked up. There is no display on the tv and the disc will not eject. The only thing that shows up is the "power on" light on the front panel. None of the controls work either on the player itself or the remote. When I do power up the unit I do hear a faint sound that sounds like the drive is spinning, and then the faint sound of a cooling fan. Then after a while the unit goes silent. The tv screen never comes on with the intro screen or anything. I did contact sony technical help, but they couldn't help. The dvd r- is supposedly a format that the bdp-s1 supports, is it possible that I got a defective disc? Certainly there must be some way to get the disc out of the unit. Maybe the disc is defective and not completely loading. Has anyone else had this problem or does anyone know of a way to open the disc door? Sure the unit is under warranty but I would rather not return/replace it or have it worked on if is just a disc issue. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Obvious question: Is the DVD-R (?) the only thing glitching up like this? Have you tried other kinds of discs?

It sounds like you just got this player. Why not go get it exchanged wherever you bought it as a defective unit, if all else fails?

You're not stuck by a longshot here.

Make sure it is not in a place where heat can cause it to lock up. My dvd player got locked up and wouldn't play or eject the disc because, my reciever was over heating the player. Try moving your player if your blu-ray player is near a heat source.

umm.. well, since you can't get the DVD out of the machine, I guess you can't try other disc, so JKT question is answered. I would think you got a defective unit. If you haven't try this yet, try unplugging the set from the power socket, then plug it back in. This ussaly resets everything, like a reboot.

I did try that with no success. When I got the player Friday it worked perfectly at first. When I hooked it up I was able to go thru the set up proceedure just fine. I even played part of the Blu-ray disc that came with the player. I also played an entire movie from a dvd r- and it played perfectly. It was later that night when I tried to play another dvd r- disc that it locked up. Sony's technical service suggested that I disconnect the power to it so that it could reboot. That didn't work. They also suggested that I power it up and just let it set so that maybe it would eventually either start playing or allow me to eject the disc. That didn't work either. The only other suggestion that they could come up with was to either exchange it, which I am working on, or bring it in for service. It also is not any where near a heat source so that is not the problem. It just seems that it is probably disc related because when I first power it up I can hear what seems to be the drive running. After a couple of minutes it just goes silent and the only thing that you can see is the "power on" light on the front panel. The tv screen never even lights up. It seems that if it is a disc problem the player would show an error message or a message that it cannot play this disc instead of locking up the whole player. It's too bad that it isn't more like a computer dvd-rom drive and had the small hole below the drive that you can insert a pin in to activate the disc eject mechanism.
