Who actually wants to exchange favorite scenes over the Blu ray player with friends. I find this feature dumb as hell. unless they come up with something really cool for this instead of exchange scenes. Then BD-live is really a bad bonus feature.
The studios should invest more in Bonus View 1.1 (U-Contol/in movie experience/picture by picture commentary+making of stuff) and not BD-Live. Just take a look at Aliens VS Predator 2 Weyland-Yutani Archives (HD) - Not a picture-in-picture commentary as you might expect, the "Weyland-Yutani Archives" is actually a graphic-based dossier on all things 'AvP. But this is pretty cool. Also Jumper has a cool Bonus View feature |

Well, we're still in the VERY early days of dealing with both features.
BonusView works well and is fairly simple to code, but its only useful for very specific things. BD-Live right now is pretty sad. Lionsgate and Sony are the only ones who've even attempted to implement BD-Live on any titles, and only in a very basic way. BD-Live has a lot of potential for cool social networking-type uses down the road, but also has the potential to create another revenue stream for the studios (selling you worthless crap at online 'studio stores'). So, yeah, right now BonusView has more interesting uses so far, but down the road that could very much change. For example, on the release date for a big title, the studio could setup a "premiere" showing, say at 9pm EST, where everyone logs onto the BD-Live server, and the movie starts at the same time for everyone. Meanwhile, the director and DP or screenwriter are watching the movie at the same time in front of a webcam and commenting on it. Depending on your preference and connection speed, you could watch them in a BonusView window or just listen to their live audio, or even just read a transcript as someone from the studio "live blogs" their comments. They could take questions (that you would type in on a "virtual keyboard" or text from your cell phone) and answer some of them during relevant portions of the film. They also could stick around after the film ends for an extended Q&A. At the same time, you and a few of your friends could have a small BD-Live chatroom going so you can discuss the movie and the director's comments just between yourselves. I could see something like that being done on some larger releases. It would be a "once in a lifetime"-type event that studios would LOVE to be able to do in the home video market, where generally there's no real incentive to buy a title TODAY as opposed to 6 months after its release. More first day sales for the studio, a really cool event for film fans, and all without that significant of a cost. It's win/win. And that's just one feature. There's many more concepts out there for incorporating web technologies into movie watching... we're just not quite there yet. |

I'm sorry, BD-Live strikes me as a really, really stupid gimmick and an irritating misdirection of resources.

The most important thing for me is high bitrate AVC video and lossless audio.
PiP just seems to be used to be lazy, and it's inconsiderate of the viewer's time. I would rather have a 10 minute feature about the movie that is densely packed with interesting info than have them drag the same useful info out over the entire length of the movie in PiP format. The last thing I want to do after I've watched a movie is to watch the whole thing again just to get a few interesting bits of extra info that they could have told me in a few minutes. |

yeah, i think i would agree with that actually. Bonus View, generally, has greater potential to give insight into the filmmaking, which i always love. BD-Live has potential to be cool, but it's a long way from being able to provide the same kind of interesting insight, until they let you download new commentaries, etc.

I do think some cool things will eventually be done with BD-Live. Right now the studios are really groping in the dark trying to figure out what works and what doesn't. I think another factor is that many of the home video departments at the studios are still trapped in a dvd mentality. I think once BDs become a mass market item(and hence larger sales) the studios will devote more time and resources to BD-Live to make it a better experience.
