How important is resolution?
Not as important as you might think. According to the Imaging Science Foundation, a group that consults for home-theater maufacturers and trains professional video calibrators, the most important aspect of picture quality is contrast ratio, the second most important is color saturation, and the third is color accuracy. Resolution comes in a distant fourth, despite being easily the most-talked-about HDTV spec today. No matter how many times you hear this - you still hear people asking - is it full HD? LOL - it means nothing if there is a 720P with better specs than the 1080P model!!! |

Yes, let's all forget about resolution!!! Give me 480P!!! These extra lines of resolution mean nothing!!!
Most all TVs being released from now on will be 1080P anyway, so why worry about it? Let me guess, you own a 720P set? Not that there is anything wrong with that, it's just that these threads usually come from that direction.... Last edited by JasonR; 07-21-2008 at 11:01 PM. |

lol....why did you post this? of course a properly tuned tv in standard def is going to look better than an hd tv that has contrast and color levels way out of wack. i think what the experts are trying to say is that when deciding on a hd tv don't just buy a 1080p tv that doesn't pass color tests and have horrible contrasts. a beautiful clear picture in high resolution that is off in color doesn't look good. you would be better served focusing on how the tv grades on those levels being 1080p and 720p are alot harder to tell the difference on most tvs than a tv calibrated correctly and one not. i know when i purchased my plasma my set being able to meet these color tests of true blue and true red and green and having deep blacks and contrast in showing shadows was the main determining factor on what tv i bought. i still purchased a 1080p set but if i wouldn't have been able to find one in my price range i would have dropped to a high performance 720p set before buying a 1080p one that couldn't match the colors or blacks. luckily i saved $800 on my 50" samsung so i didn't have to choose. got the best of both worlds..higher resolution and great color levels.
