I never seen the film, but it is nice to see Independent distributors starting blu-ray!

It's a very well made and acted film. No action (well not explosions anyway) but still captivating. I hope that its done to the best of the film stock as it is a fairly low-budget film. I remembered watching it on VHS in mono.

Anyone have any info on the Kiss of the Spider Woman blu-ray which just showed up on the Pre-Order list? Apparently it's an Amazon.com exclusive offering, and I've heard absolutely nothing about it up until now.

This is a great movie, mostly because of the performances by William Hurt and Raul Julia.

It's funny, but this movie hasn't been released on DVD yet (I got to watch it via Laserdisc). It's surprising to see that it will make its debut through Blu Ray (simultaneously with the regular DVD). I guess its the first case for a pre-DVD-era movie.

I hope Ken Russell's The devils will be the second case.

The 1985 cult classic "Kiss of the Spider Woman," from City Lights Home Entertainment, is available now for the first time since its theatrical release as a full-length download exclusively on Amazon.com's Unbox.

Consumers will be able to rent the film for $2.99 for 30 days or buy it outright for $9.99. The film also will be available on standard DVD and Blu-ray Disc, again exclusively on Amazon.com, beginning July 22. The DVD lists for $25.99 and the Blu-ray Disc, $27.95.

"Amazon customers have asked for 'Kiss of the Spider Woman' for many years," said Peter Farici, vp of movies and music at Amazon. "By making it available in so many mediums on Amazon.com, independent film fans can discover a classic that has not been seen in theaters for more than 23 years and has not been available on video for more than 15 years.

"The wonderful thing about producing in the new-media landscape is that we are able to bring classic films directly and instantly to customers' living rooms via Amazon Unbox, DVD or Blu-ray."

Sal Scamardo, president of City Lights Home Entertainment, says "'Kiss of the Spider Woman' changed the industry against all odds and symbolizes the pure spirit of independent filmmaking."

"As an emerging major independent film and video studio, we're excited to preserve and promote that spirit and satisfy consumer demand across multiple home-entertainment platforms," he said.

The movie has one of William Hurt's finest performance. And before the Brokeback Brigade starts with the one-liners - yes, he plays a flaming gay character. If you have any problem with it, don't buy it.

I couldn't wait for it to finish, and you would have to pay me about $100 to sit thru it again.

I remember seeing this ASTOUNDING movie in a film festival like 15 years ago. I always wondered why this wonderful movie was never released on DVD.

But here we have finally Héctor Babenco's masterpiece: "Kiss of the Spider Woman" on Blu!

Time to see once again the late Raul Juliá and William Hurt in perhaps their best performances ever. And... the delicious Sonia Braga at her prime

I saw this when I was a senior in high school and it blew me away. Glad to see it coming to BD. Great film that asks the question, "What does it mean to be free?"

Can anybody tell me what has happened? The page in amazon reads: "This item has been discontinued by the manufacturer". How could it had been discontinued if it was never released? (It was supposed to be an amazon "exclusive").

I wonder the same. what the hell happened? Is this movie gonna be released or not?
ufff I was about to pre-order it when I found that this movie was not longer available for pre-order and in fact "discontinued".

Same thing happened with the BD for "The Princess Bride", it was announced but never was released and still haven't been released

Bummer. Maybe they have production issues, either from the HD master to final encoding or menu.
