But that's over seas where they always typically release the 3D version before the U.S. gets it and then sometimes we don't get a 3D version at all.

TFA 3D Blu-Ray was released at a later date as well like in US. This time there is preorders of the 3D Blu-Ray now. I think Disney/Lucasfilm learned their mistake to release it later will only alienate a lot of customers and they would lose money. Now it looks like they will release like Disney/Marvel and release 2D and 3D Blu's at sametime. which is great

I have this fantasy of Disney releasing a 4 movie set with special packaging including Rogue One and the theatrical versions of the OT. Like in a black digibook or something, maybe call it the Journal of the Whills edition.
But it would also make sense for them to do the same thing they did with TFA and do a spring and fall release. Maybe I'll be able to hold out for this one... but I doubt it. |

Here's my non-spoiler review of the movie...
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story follows the group of heroes who embark on a mission to steal the secret schematics that were used to destroy the Death Star in the original 1977 film, Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, and the most enthusiastic compliment that I can give to this latest movie is that it makes A New Hope even better by casting a fresh new light on the harrowing wartime atmosphere that surrounds the events of that familiar tale. In fact, I cannot wait to revisit the opening scene of that first Star Wars film so that I can appreciate the newfound perspective that I will have on the already shell-shocked Rebel soldiers who line up in the ship corridor to fire on Darth Vader when he comes through the door. This stand-alone movie helpfully explains a few of the nitpicking questions that some of us had about the original film, especially the question of why such a powerful space station like the Death Star would have a glaring design flaw that could lead to its destruction, and it also throws a few fun nods to the original without coming across as a pointless fanboy effort. At its heart, Rogue One is a war movie, and it exudes the same aura of ever-present danger and desperation that we've seen in classic films about the French Resistance in World War II, where ragtag characters take deadly risks to accomplish small noble goals in an ongoing battle of attrition against a seemingly-unstoppable evil regime. I believe that this movie is suitable for all ages, but it definitely takes on a darker and more adult tone by focusing on the wars in the title, "Star Wars." A minor grievance against Rogue One is that it often feels rushed in a way that does not allow us to familiarize ourselves with the people who make up the heroic team. This movie does not have time for the quiet character-building moments of the earlier films, like the scene where Luke Skywalker gazes wistfully at the sky while standing on his farm in Tatooine at the beginning of A New Hope or the scene where Rey prepares her dinner inside her makeshift home in The Force Awakens, so I did not feel quite as invested in these people as they embarked on their seemingly hopeless quest. That said, I did appreciate the handful of sequences that introduced me to the Rogue One group, and I do think that a few moments really stand out. I am a huge fan of the Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman movie series that was released in Japan during the 1960s and 1970s, and I love the fact that one major character, played by Donnie Yen, was obviously modeled after Zatoichi. The visuals and special effects in Rogue One are incredible, as expected, and, aside from one gratingly obtrusive computer-generated reveal of an iconic character at the end of the film, I was impressed with how this movie seamlessly blends in with its predecessors in terms of having a lived-in and battle-worn look to the spaceships and outfits. It's a great eye candy movie across the board, and I'm looking forward to seeing it on the big screen again in a couple of days. |
