Question Re: Sony DG920

Thoughts???
I really am tempted to hold out buying the Yamaha v663, but does anyone have any idea on whether or not this receiver is likely to deliver the goods?

The GUI and 4 HDMI inputs are certainly tempting on that Sony.

You are going to get a lot of Sony bashing by people that have never owned a Sony receiver, you've been warned. I preordered mine based on my previous Sony's performance and the price I received it (less than $400). I think you will be happy with either choice.

Edit: I was able to do interest free payroll deduction on it too, that certainly didn't hurt. The economy sucks, what can I say...

You are just asking for the Anti-Sony-Non-ES people to come out and tell you how the letters ES don't appear in that model code. I am interested to have a listen to the 920, but as it isn't out yet, we can only speculate. The before-mentioned group will be nay-sayers, people like me will want to listen to it first, and there's the few who will look at the specs and say "Oh that will definately be awesome." Cos the specs do sound pretty good. Sorry, can't be any more help.

I can't speak for the sony, but I can tell you I was Ecstatic after setting up my yamaha 663!!!!! going from an htib receiver to this (even though I'm currently still using htib speakers) was a huge upgrade. can't even imagine how it's gonna sound with my deftech mythos.

My corporate account rep knocked around 80 dollars off that already good price, and my employer let me do payroll deduction. My order says it should ship on the 16th.

What are your needs and what is your preference audio or video performance? I own a Yamaha 663 and I own a Sony (bedroom receiver) so yes, I'm biased, but if you are more of a video person - I would (I can't belive I'm saying this) recommend the Sony (more HDMI inputs - and Sony does a good job on video), but when it comes audio perfomance....Let the Sony rants rave!!!! The Yamaha is just better audio wise. It's your decision. Choose according to your needs.

Hey, Jason, just out of curiosity what kind of speakers are you driving with your Sony receiver(s)?

The early press on the DG920 all said it would have TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio. Here's an example: http://news.sawf.org/Tech/48509.aspx . But if you look at the specs on sonystyle.com now those features aren't listed: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/...52921665364793

Does anyone know what happened to those features? Did they decide to downgrade the DG920?

It's on there, Sonystyle doesn't get jack right.

Here is the manual.

And it's on the front panel.

Just regular 12 guage speaker wire. NXG banana plugs in the 663, and just "crimped" down with the cheap speakers.

Anyone have any hands-on experience with a DG920 yet? I think this is the amp I'll get but it's so new that there isn't much information available yet. I'd like to know if it has any bugs before I buy one.

Okay, got a DG920. It pretty much rocks. This was an upgrade from a Sony DE445. The main thing that stands out is the clean, crisp sound. The DE445 had a fair amount of hiss and I don't here that at all with the DG920 unless the volume is up a lot louder than I would ordinarily have it. Sound seems crisper and more detailed in general, but that's harder to quantify than the reduced hiss.

I can't tell any difference between lossless audio and Dolby Digital. This is probably due to my <queue bose bashing>Bose Acoustimass 6 series II speaker set </queue bose bashing>. They're a good 80% solution, but no audiophile dream.

The only thing I wish the 920 had is a couple plug sockets on the back for powering my CD player or other components. The DE445 had one; I don't know why they left that feature off the 920

A couple tips for good sound: Make sure the D. Range Comp is turned off. It will flatten out any incoming Dolby Digital sound if you happen to be listening to a disk with no lossless track. Also make sure Night Mode is turned off; it will flatten out any sound (not just Dolby Digital). If your blu-ray player is a PS3, make sure Dynamic Range Control is turned off. I think it's basically the same thing as D. Range Comp on the DG920. Either of those features will make you think lossless audio sounds a lot better than Dolby Digital when you're really just crippling the Dolby Digital track.

Sweet! It looks like I should have been paying more attention to the 820 thread. Hope your 3 hours go by fast. It's like torture when you have a new toy and no time to use it. Now I just want enough time to sit down and watch a whole blu-ray.
