Default Samsung BD-P1000 1.6 update out

Looks like Samsung finally pulled their finger out and released the 1.6 update for the BD-P1000. Haven't installed it yet so can't say what it does/doesn't do. Anyone brave enough to be the first?

Ok. I did the update. In all honesty I don't see that it did anything. Cloverfield is still tits up. Independence Day is tits up. Guess I'll have to wait on either another update for those (yeah, right) or wait for some of the newer players to come out later (Panasonic, Sony or Pioneer) and upgrade to them (I need the 5.1 analogs).

I guess your best bet will be Panasonic BD-50 or Sony BDP-S550 both of them will have 5.1 analog outputs and they are the latest .Both of them can decode the advanced audio DolbyTrueHD and DTSHDMA through their analog outputs.

Panasonic BDP-50 will be released in July31 whereas Sony player will be released this coming Fall ...

must say the update didnt look like it didnt do anything. Thanks to Cloverfield, has made me go for a ps3 now. Just wondering how many more future releases will be dogged with such playback issues.

Default BD-R/RE playback

Anyone played correctly BD-R/RE media on BD-P1000 after 1.6 firmware upgrade? Since about ten months, I’m authoring HD video with Adobe Premiere and Encore and I’m burning BD-R media which I play on BD-P1000 without problems, but I’m afraid doing the upgrade I can’t play anymore BD-R/RE media.

I helped a friend install the 1.6 update.

Sorry to hear it's still problematic.

At least, I think he understands how to burn ISO's now so he should be set for next time.

Some of us need the analog 5.1 outs, hence the need to keep the crap a while longer. The PS3, as glorious and all serving as it is and even considered by some owners as the best thing since sliced bread, doesn't offer those. But if I ever need a space heater in my HT room, I guess the PS3 would fill the need nicely.

Time to upgrade from your pro-logic receiver.

I bought a refurbished HDMI Audio AVR and ... it's a fun activity, I recommend it to anyone.

-Brian

p.s. For me sliced bread is like "meh..". Really not as impressive as it's made out to be. If I just had to tear chucks out of a loaf it wouldn't be such a big deal. I think the PS3 is the greatest even when you factor in the amazing wow factor that sliced bread brings to the table.

I have an Outlaw 990. Not really interested in giving that up just for the HDMI right now, especially when the analogs work just fine. No HDMI handshake issues, no audio dropouts . . .

Hey,

I can relate to that too... HDMI is scare-y. I never know when It's gonna glitch up. (It never does but it's still scare-y.)

Isn't is sweet how a simple question about a firmware update turns into a hardware flame war?

Simply gotta love people and their brand loyalties. For me I want a BD disc player, not a gaming console that can also play BD discs. Just my 2 cents ...

That being said, I hope the original poster got the answer he was really looking for, but I doubt it. Ther BDP-1000 is a pretty early player and is unfortunately probably pretty near ending it's usefulness it would seem. I have the BDP-1400 and so far I haven't found a single title it can't play. But then there are hundreds of titles out there that I have yet to try, so you never know.

Dark Clown,

I think maybe you mis-read something. I saw no hardware flame war and have no brand loyalty.

Like I said,.. I helped a friend do the FW update yesterday and simply open-ed the thread to read more about it.

Analog outputs are a compelling reason not to go with the PS3 but one of the benifits of upgrading to HDMI-Audio is ... you get all the benifits of HDMI Audio.

Anyway,.. Thanks for your insights.

Good Luck,

Brian

Well I did think about replacing my Outlaw 990 and getting an HDMI receiver, but didn't really want to "downgrade" just to have the HDMI for the advanced audio on the Blu ray, especially if the Panasonic 50, the new Sony 550 or the Pioneer (can't remember the model number) can decode all those new audios for me and deliver it through the analog audio (either 5.1 or 7.1). And the new Outlaw with HDMI that isn't out yet is supposedly going to go for around $1400 (according to an email/info sheet I got directly from Outlaw). At this point I'm going to keep the Outlaw since it does everything I need (except for the advanced audio) and then get one of the newer players that will decode the advanced audio. My Sony SXRD has HDMI ins and outs, and I have a Monoprice 5x1 switcher for all my HDMI needs right now, so all will be good once I get rid of the older Samsung and get a new model. Hopefully they won't be as quirky as the Samsung.

If so, then my apologies. Mainly I saw a question about a firmware update to a set top BD player and then a bunch of comments on how much the "PS3 ROX". I'm just gettoing tired of every PS3 owner telling 'the rest of us' that we need to get one too. As I said in my previous post I have no interest what-so-ever in gaming consoles and I just don't understand why anyone needs to bring them up when it had nothing at all to do with the original question.

But then again, neither does my post. So, I admit I am just as guilty

Cheers....

So how happy are you with that Monoprice HDMI switcher? I've been shopping for a new amp but I don't wan to have to pay the price necessary to get something with more than 3 HDMI ports. It just doesn't make sense in my small theater.

Never had a problem with the Monoprice 5x1 switch. I had the 3x1 before that, but as my equipment list grew, so did the need for more HDMI ports. I'm even using my Sony 400 disc megachangers through this switcher, although a lot of people weren't able to get it to work. Never an issue and would recommend them. I have 2 Sony megachangers, HD DVD, Blu ray player and my Oppo 980 going through it. My Directv DVR is going directly to the Outlaw with an HDMI-DVI cable. All audio connections are digital or coaxial (except the Blu ray player). And the switcher can be controlled with the Harmony remote as well. For the price they are well worth it.

Thanks for your input. For the price, it certainly seems worth the gamble to at least give it a try. I've had some bad experiences in the past with low cost HDMI cables causing serious signal degradation. So having 2 HDMI cables and a switch in the middle of them per connection, rather than one HDMI cable connecting direct has me a little concerned about loss of quality. Guess I'll never know if I don't give it a try.

Not sure what the deal is, but Samsung apparently updated the 1.6 firmware. It now lists "updated 6.26.08" under the build date. The file name is the same so I'm not sure if it is a new file or just some Korean mind trick. Anyone gonna try it?

Finally had some free time and I installed the 1.6 (part 2) update. The loader was the same, but the main firmware and sub firmware were different. Can't really tell what it did though. Cloverfield still doesn't play, nor does Independence Day. Men In Black does play though, so I guess it's something to look forward to.
