So I have been commenting in several threads about lack of Blu Ray extras compared to their DVD counterparts and have decided to start a thread about it.
I am a completist. On DVD I would always search out and find the best edition of a movie. Sometimes I would own two copies of a movie to have the complete package. I recently started buying Blu Ray movies, hoping that I would be able to replace most if not all of my DVDs, and have been startled to find that Blu Ray surpasses DVDs with picture and sound, but when it comes the extras department, they are usually a lot worse. If anyone wants to comment or throw up some examples where the DVD is better or worse in the extras department, then by all means. MISSING DVD EXTRAS *I am leaving off the discs that are bare bones as I'm sure they will be double dipped. I'm more concerned with the discs that are missing a few extras here and there, and will probably not be re-released. Day of the Dead Still Galleries Doomsday Theatrical Cut of Film Anatomy of Catastrophe: Civilization on the Brink The Visual Effects and Wizardry of Doomsday Devices of Death: Guns, Gadgets and Vehicles of Destruction *NOTE some of the footage from the three featurettes are included in the Picture in Picture, but not all from what I've heard. Cannot be watched edited together or fullscreen, as the Picture in Picture shows it in the corner of the screen. You'll find that many here prone the PQ and AQ over extras. Personnally i rarely watch extra because i have no time to do so. I watched Cloverfield and Rambo extra, but that's about all on my 120 Blu-ray. Most extra of older film are 480i and the quality is so crappy that i don't even bother..

I think the real problem is that Blu Ray has this thing where they rarely do 2 disc sets.
Before Blu Ray came out all the talk was about how much space you would be able to fit on them. I remember people talking about how you could fit season sets on 1 or 2 discs, or the 4 disc LOTR sets on 1 disc. Of course, no one took into consent that the improved picture and sound would take up all that extra space. Now they don't want to admit that the extra room on the discs doesn't mean less discs for your sets, so they refuse to do multi disc sets. Yes, I do know there have been 2 disc sets, but its very rare. Most of the time they just lose extra features that they feel aren't that important. Doesn't make sense to me why Blu Ray has to be inferior to DVDs in the extras department. Blu Rays should be better in every way, picture, sound and extras! Hell, they charge like they are! I also hate how they don't do the cool special edition sets that DVDs have. Why do they feel that Blu Ray owners just want plain and boring movies with good picture and sound and nothing more. I want the steel cases, the planet of the ape shaped head, the hellboy busts, ect. I got into Blu Ray because I thought it offered the best of everything, when in reality it definitely doesn't. Now when new releases come out I have to read up a bunch of reviews and decide what is better, and the Blu Ray doesn't always come out on top! Anyways, I know people are going to read this and say Blu Ray is only about sound and picture, blah blah blah. I disagree! If we are paying this much it should be the ultimate package, not less then what was being released 5 years ago. DVD's sold so well and took over VHS not just because of the sound and picture, but because of the cool extras and menus, ect. It was a huge step up in every way. It's a shame that Blu Ray isn't doing the same thing, and instead is in some ways a step down from what we've had. |

Yeah, I find extras on Blu-Rays to be a double edged knife. I know that extras are a big thing for me. If I'm going to be replacing my DVD's for Blu's I want all of the featurettes of my previous DVD along with improved PQ and AQ. The reason I'm waiting for JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK to be double dipped is so that all the featurettes from the 2 disc SE would be on there. And I was on the fence for THE ROCK until I saw that Disney did the pimp move and imported all the Criterion featurettes onto the Blu-Ray.
With LIFE OF BRIAN, I wanted to see if all the Criterion extras would be on the Blu-Ray as well. I noticed that they were missing some behind the scenes footage that was shot on location, but it didn't bother me too much since they included this really well done hour long documentary on the genesis and impact of LIFE OF BRIAN. But I think with the earlier Blu's there weren't that many extras since it was a new technology and still testing it out, especially since it wasn't fully developed. But if you look at the extras for upcoming stuff like the two seasons of HEROES and FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL as well as the 5 disc BLADE RUNNER, those Blu's are packed to the gills. I'm even planning on getting a brand new stand alone Blu-Ray player that's 2.0 compliant so that I can actually access these features. |
