Was just reading through some threads, and I began to think about some of these younger "Blu-ray commandos" fighting for Blu-ray, telling people how great it is, making fun of the ignorant, etc.... and although I think it's kind of silly to think "the world can be swayed" etc.... and I don't think there is anything wrong with people who choose not to "go Blu" nor do I think people who say "DVD is good enough for me" are stupid..... they believe it, as long as they are happy, why should we care???
Sometimes I think the "Where can I get a Blu-ray banner to hang in my bedroom" threads are funny, etc... but after all of this, the enthusiasm of these younger consumers got me thinking...... I had a VCP (nope.. didn't record!) in my bedroom in my younger days when I was living with my parents.... I had a couple of movies and didn't see the need to buy any..... I actually have personally NEVER owned a VCR/VCP, and still don't..... I went off to school to ensure I didn't end up living in the dump-hole town I grew up in, and in 1997 I bought a DVD player, and soon I found myself buying all sorts of movies because it was just the whole "wow" factor..... I mean, I didn't even have to Frickin' rewind!!!! It was a hit in the dorms to boot..... I bought a 5.1 set-up for a couple grand, and was enjoying life (without doing much research unfortunately) I would tell people who thought it was "unnecessary" that they didn't know what they were talking about..... I'd buy titles just to "show off" the system.... I was a big "Go-DVD" kinda guy..... The result of this new-found love of DVD, oddly enough, was the beginning of a great appreciation for "FILM" crazy concept I know, but film became very important to me..... and I had watched, understood, enjoyed, pondered about, theorized and debated about, many different films in the process of "collecting DVDs for the sake of collecting DVDs" I have since dumped my "dumb purchases" in terms of DVDs and I purchase selectively (not too selective according to my wife!) My job at a local video store when I was 16 didn't turn me onto "film" it took DVD to do that. I see the enthusiasm that Blu-ray has caused in many younger members here, and although the PS3 is probably a big driving force, in addition to the "desire to be apart of a format war" I find many here are watching 30-40 year old classic films for the first time, and perhaps Blu-ray will bring about the next big renaissance of film appreciation...... |
