Default video glitch at scene change

I just set up some new equipment:

Sony KDL-46Z4100 monitor
Sony BDP350 Blu-Ray player

The monitor has a 120Hz refresh rate. The player is connected directly to the monitor via a 3-foot HDMI cable. Both ends of the cable are securely connected.

The problem I am seeing is a video glitch that looks like a flicker of an earlier image, usually where the scene changes. It's almost as if a cache is being flushed, and the results are showing up on the screen for a split second. This occurs for both Blu-Ray and standard DVD manufactured discs (no DVD-R copies), but is more prevalent with the standard DVDs. All of the settings having to do with the image are set to "auto" on both the player and the monitor. I've just ordered in a new HDMI cable to see if the one I'm using may be bad.

Has anyone else seen anything similar? Thanks for any info and/or help you can provide!

Try setting the Motion Enhancer to Off (or perhaps even standard).

Maybe the 120Hz processing is trying to combining the previous scene with the next one resulting in a combination of the two.

^^^Try doing what he said. That's what I would've recommended too.

Thanks very much for the suggestion. I made the setting change for the motion enhancer to "off" and got the same result. I then tried the "standard" setting and there was no change. I'm wondering if I have a defective monitor or player.

Well that was worth a try...

If you have another TV or another DVD player in the house you could verify if it's the TV or the player. You could also use components cable to verify if it's the HDMI part. Finally you could go to the store that sold you the set and ask to plug the same setup as you got, then bring a title that you know exactly where the problem is and see if the same problem occurs...

You could also check out the KDL-XXZ4100 thread on AVS maybe someone with the same configuration as you could confirm this...

Well good luck, tell us when you find a solution.

Thanks, again, for the great suggestions. I did find and fix the problem, which turned out to be a cable-seating issue. The HDMI inputs on both the monitor and the player were, obviously, new and very tight. What I thought was a fully-seated cable was, in fact, not! I fully removed the cable and reseated it, applying slight, alternating upward, downward, left, and right pressure on each end as I did so. I then tested both Blu-Ray and standard DVD program material and the problem has disappeared. What led me to try this was the sheer number of other postings regarding issues with poorly-seated HDMI connections.

Following up on my initial post, I did some further testing after installing a new HDMI cable, and still got the same results with standard DVDs. The Blu-Ray issue is completely resolved. I had initially thought that the entire issue was resolved after reseating the cables, but that was not the case.

I called the Sony support line, and they suggested that I try the following:

1. remove all power from the monitor for 5 minutes then reconnect

2. reset all of the monitor settings to the factory defaults

These steps produced no change, so the Sony folks set up an appointment for in-home service.

After all of this, I decided to just watch a few other discs and try to ignore the glitches. Surprisingly, there weren't any glitches! I went back to the original disc that I had been viewing when the problem presented, and the glitches were there. So, now it looks like a possible disc mastering/manufacturing defect. I'm leaning toward mastering, since the disc in question was part of a set, and the other discs in the set all exhibit the same problem.

I'm still going to have the service technician come out and run whatever diagnostic tests they may have, just in case.

In retrospect, the appearance of the glitches when the discs were being viewed on another DVD player, and at various resolutions, should have raised a flag with respect to the media. For the record, the set that exhibited the video glitches was "Sliders, Season 4".
