as said above, i think a few movies like the postman and waterworld did it

combine that with not being a high profile guy in LA and not jumping on couches during interviews...

I don't presume to know how Hollywood works but I think someone becomes a star or never becomes one depending on how well their movies do. I assume that at some point Costner's films were not so popular hence a lowering in his salary per movie and less and less calls for new roles. From a business point of view it would seem logic

He was just a fad, like 90% of the actors in Hollywood. Very few have staying power.

but are those with staying power actually good? there's some that have it but i almost always have zero interest in their films.

I liked him in Robin Hood. I probably agree with you on Waterworld killing his career. It was on last Saturday night when they found that fish human that Costner was playing, but I decided to watch something intresting, like TNA.

I don't get the impression that anyone proactively dislikes Kevin Costner. The irony of you posting the Robin Hood poster is compelling, however...you'll recall that Kevin was too cool to adopt an English accent for the flick, when everyone else did.

Kevin Costner's view of himself is similar to how nerds view Chuck Norris. Movies like Waterworld and especially The Postman were love letters to himself.

Think Postman is underrated. Yes Watrworld had a past of it and Tin Cup to. Try to make a comeback with another baseball movie. For Love of the Game but that didn't work out to well. To me from those previews and stuff I was looking forward to it until I heard most of it was a love story.

Personally, I thought Waterworld was fine, Postman, not so much, but I think he was great in Mr. Brooks. Granted he's done some junk work, but not every movie can be Dances with Wolves. Of course, it doesn't help when you do movies like Swing Vote.

i can also say that i know costner on a personal level. not a bad guy and pretty fun. he did get pretty caught up in himself for a while there though. he's toned it down a lot recently (from what i hear) which is prob why there have been some better films of late.

I think Swing Vote for him is going to be like Man of the Year was for Robin Williams

I'll admit that I sat through The Postman and I actually thought twice about harming myself afterward...While it was watchable and had some interesting themes (and Tom Petty)...I don't know that I would personally categorize it as underrated. You must admit that it's an incredibly narcissistic movie on Costner's part.

Ironic, indeed. Costner's performance in Robin Hood is among the many reasons folks don't care for him. Here's a quote from the NY Times review by Vincent Canby:

Quote:
...Mr. Costner is the film's big problem. He plays Robin as if the character were a movie star being gracious to his fans. He is polite, but he doesn't exert himself. There's nothing wrong with his accent, which sounds plain American most of the time, only with his attitude.

the only thing that saved that movie was Alan Rickman and Morgan Freeman...

Seem that at one point or another some Hollywood actors make bad decision when they pick a movie...for Costner it was Waterworld, Postman and Tin Cup. Three stinkers in a row and that won't have that phone ringing off the hook.

I personally think he is a good actor and hopefully one movie at a time he will get back in top form.

Waiting for the BodyGuard and Robin Hood in Blu.

Haven't you all noticed, almost every movie or TV show made is directed to the really young group. Kevin Costner is a great actor, have you not seen Guardian. There is so many really great actors out there. Unfortunately, we are overtaken by people who cut off all their hair, drink and drive, are in re-hab, if your not one of these than you just don't fit in.

Pretty sad I say.

Mr. Brooks rocked (very pleasant surprise) but not sure what else I'd care to watch him in.
