I was wondering why is Warner Bros. and Universal Studios releasing HD-DVD combos.
It raises the price of the disc dramaticly and I don't see any reason why somebody owning a HD-DVD player would want the SD version Then it hit me Warner Bros and Univeral Studios are not stupid. They are making combos on HD-DVD for 2 reasons - Increased price for useless SD version = more profit for studio - Increased price hastens HD-DVD death It's a win win situation They force combos on them so they can charge HD-DVD owners extra price and the same time bring down the format. HD-DVD combos are meant to bridge the way to blu-ray, no self respecting studio would release its newest and best movies for the next format of choice in a rediculous 'combo' format. Both Warner and Universal know HD-DVDs death is a matter of when and not if, so they released these stupid combos to squeeze even MORE money then usual out of it before it dies. Sad but true IMO Thoughts? |

Waaay before HD-DVD combos came out, Blu-ray disc had that idea first. I saw it at a blu-ray conference, explaining that because the blu-ray data layer was so close to the laser, they could fit a whole DVD-9 in the middle of the disc still, all on a single sided disc.
HD-DVD most likely thought this is what would cause a win, and did it in their format, but did it poorly because the HD-DVD data layer is right where the DVD data layer is, so it becomes a battle of who gets to double layer their data, HD or DVD. I'm glad blu-ray didn't go this route because I never ever use standard def for anything anymore, and I wouldn't want to. |

So your basically saying that they are recouping their losses for a dyeing format? Its a smart idea for companies that know a particular item that is dyeing. Also prob a reason why Universal has held on so long, since they have put alot of money into HD DVD, they want to gain back loses and keep it all under hush.
