Default PS3 -> HDMI -> Samsung AS720 - no sound help?

Ok, so my configuration, I have component cables connecting PS3 to TV just for video.
I have HDMI from PS3 to the samsung as720 receiver (DVD HDMI1).

Now in my PS3 settings, in display settings I set video out with component.
In sound settings, I set HDMI for audio output and I chose automatic.

I set my receiver to the right input mode (DVD Multi-CH) is what it says on the screen of the receiver, and there is a L.PCM thats lit up above it. Problem is that I get no sound.. I've tried powering everything off and turning on receiver first, then the PS3, and the other way around but its not working.

Any ideas?

your Samsung only has HDMI passthrough, video only, no sound.... so that means you can only get surround through optical from the PS3

I am pretty sure that it can process audio through HDMI. According to the manual, it says it can playback video and audio through HDMI cable. Also, it says it has HDMI audio processing in avs forum.

Is this wrong?

Yes, I have it plugged into the HDMI1 port (DVD), and on the receiver its on the DVD HDMI1 input. After turning on my PS3, it detects and changes to "DVD Multi-CH." I believe that it detects the signal because the display changes when I'm switching between LPCM and bitstream setting when playing a blu-ray movie, but still no sound.

I set one of these up once and I'm pretty sure you have to go into the settings menu on the Samsung and assign the dvd input to HDMI. If I remember right there was 3 choices HDMI, Optical..etc

I think that should do it

I had it on the right input. Yea the 3rd choice was analog i believe. I've also tried switching to the second HDMI input (SAT), and on the SAT HDMI1 mode, still getting no sound.

Could there be something wrong with my system that I should replace it, although it would be a hassle to exchange it because a friend of my friend bought it for me...

I'm waiting for another HDMI cable to arrive so I can connect the HDMI out from receiver to TV as well, so I wouldn't have to use component video, but I wonder if that might help. But I dont think it should matter huh? Could it be HDMI cable issue?

Any more ideas?

When I troubleshoot any A/V system for a client I found the best way is to do process of elimination, so if you had another HDMI cable you could potenially rule out 2 possibilities. If you ran HDMI monitor out to your tv and and had no video to your tv then I would say it is a a setting issue or a bad hdmi port on your samsung. It would also let you know if your other HDMI cable is bad, but that is Highly unlikely to have a faulty HDMI cable. If you are sure the settings on your PS3 and a/v receiver are correct, then it is quite possible you have a faulty HTIB, as I have come across a few of these before.

did you set audio out from the PS3 to HDMI - Linear PCM?

is there an option in the Receiver for "HDMI Audio--> AVR"

I bet that's a bad HDMI cable.

Alright, I got it to work, for some reason I had to connect another HDMI out of receiver to TV. Anyways, it sounds awesome!

Thanks guys.
