After 2½ years of using my Outlaw 990, it went tits up yesterday. Tries to power on, does the clicking noises, then shuts off. Everything in my system is connected to a Panamax M5300EX (and everything else is working fine). Nothing comes up on the screen and can't get it to stay on. I've checked the connections, tried to reset (still won't work), unplugged and reconnected, the whole nine yards. Called Outlaw and got an RMA to send it back.
Now, once before this did the same thing, but just before I was ready to disconnect everything and send it in, it came back to life and worked fine up until today. I spoke with support last time and we concluded that it was my Monster power center and I replaced it with the Panamax. Guess that wasn't the problem. Anyhow, to make a long story short, I'm thinking of getting it repaired and moving it to my audio only setup. I'm looking at the Denon AVR-2808CI to take it's place and then use my Outlaw amp to power it. Does this sound like a good idea? Will I be stepping down from the 990 by going to the Denon? |

quality-of-amp-wise i think you'll be ok. Save up a little extra and get the 3808 though; sooo much nicer for not too much more.

I've packed the 990 up and shipped it back to Outlaw for repairs. Hopefully it will come back okay and it'll hold me over until something comes out that I want to trade up to. But I do know that I don't think I'll be buying something where I have to ship it back for warranty work (although the 5 year warranty is good, the shipping on this thing was pretty steep). Just glad the amp didn't go tits up, otherwise I would have had to remortgage my house to pay for the shipping.

Just in case anyone is interested, it appears it was the power supply that went off. It was replaced and is on it's way back now. Should have it on the 8th.
Now I just have to pull out the manual and re-read on how to program all the settings again. Luckily I labeled every cable and have a sheet with a setup diagram showing the connections. What a pain that is though. |
