Default Live Action Anime Remakes

How can hollywood remake anime? So far I know of 2 anime movies being remade into live action

-Akira
-Kite

I know Akira would take tons of CGI (if you have seen Akira, then you know what I'm talking about).

But what about Kite? How can that one be done with out pissing off the censors and the religious reich? The Anime is essentially a hentai with a story about a young teen girl (13 I think) who is an assassin and sex slave. The movie shows very bloody death scenes (involving exploding bullets), and intense sex scenes. The cover even says "ABSOLUTELY! NOT FOR CHILDREN!"

Would it be possible?

I think Akira could have potential, if done correctly. As far as Kite goes though, I don't know what is running through the producer's head. There are some cases where animation is the most appropriate form to tell a story.

In addition to these, I've also heard about Ghost in the Shell, Battle Angel, and Cowboy Bebop. There are also a few other titles, I know about, but can't mention for reasons of confidentiality.... I'm sure I'm also forgetting a couple. Live action adaptation is really nothing new though. It's been going on in Japan pretty much since there has been animation. However, most of these titles are being done in the US, and with pretty big budgets.

James Cameron is making the live action version of Battle Angel, but since it's him I can't wait. I personally think he'll do a good job. Only thing is though that it will be a condensed version of the books. Only 1 film is planned from what I know.

I was about to mention that one.
Battle Angel would be awesome if done right, and that is what scares me. If it is done wrong it would be awful!

I have heard Ghost in the Shell and Cowboy Bebop. There have been rumors of Evangelion for ages but I have seen nothing on it actually happen.
There is Cashan Robot Hunter live action, and also Video Girl Ai live action, and I heard rumors there was a Lum/Urusei Yatsura live action, but I have not seen any of these... yet.
not to mention to live action Sailor Moon tv series.

I remember reading somewhere that Blood: Last Vampire and AstroBoy are getting remakes as well.

as much as im a DB/Z/GT fan, even thou GT is aweful, all i keep thinking is "BUST" with this movie. its got great potential but the special efftects needed for it is going to make the budget tremendous and perhaps a bit cheesy looking....ill go see it anyways just cuz i love the series.

Now that I think of it, Kite could be good, but Mel Gibson would have to direct.

James Cameron confirmed in an interview that this will be a combination of the first three books in Yukito Kishiro's series of graphic novels. In another interview, Cameron also said that should this film be successful, he hopes to make another two "Battle Angel" films.
Quote:
By the intended release date of Summer 2009, Cameron hopes that around a thousand theaters across North America will have been equipped with special 3D digital projectors that will be able to screen the movie.
It will have about 1500 CG shots as well.

Akira could have real potential, but it definitely would have to be done right.

Woah, woah, woah. There was a live action version of Sailor Moon? Now, I'm not a man of Anime (in fact I don't really like it, no offence to anyone), but since when did this come about?

It started in late 2003, and ran about a year. It was playing on one of my trips over. It kind of had the feel of a cross between Sailor Moon and Power Rangers. ^_^;

We are also forgetting the live action adaptation of Maison Ikkoku. Honestly, I avoid most Japanese live action versions like the plague (though I thought Casshern provided some pretty good eye candy). I'm hoping people like Cameron will do them more justice.

What is the point in a live action version of an anime?? I somehow doubt it's any cheaper to make, or easier.

I'm not sure I really see one. The best I can figure is that you already have a built in fan base who is likely to check it out just because it is related, so they can pretty easily predict how much money it will make. Something like "Grave of the Fireflies" was an exception, in that there was nothing special effects wise, or in the styling, that specifically made anime the only appropriate vehicle. It was also popular across a much broader audience because of it's historical significance, and the fact that it's required viewing in schools. Still, as even this one demonstrated, the quality level of most live action movies just isn't at the same level as that of anime, and certainly no where close to Hollywood. For the same money they can generally still do a much superior version animated.
