Gangs of New York pq? - Blu-ray Forum

So i really love the movie. but i've seen the terrible reviews for the picture quality of the movie on blu. If im a fan of the movie is it worth buying? and is it really as bad as people are saying?

I love the movie and bought it and I'm glad I did. It's not "pristine", but it was definitely worth the purchase for me. But I also didn't have a problem with Dracula or Halloween and I actually bought Dragon Wars, so my judgment is suspect.

well i also own dragon wars. and actually enjoyed it (only because i didnt expect anything going into it) and thought it had a pretty good pq. Thanks need some more opinions tho

I agree it wasn't great, but I don't think it was as bad as it is being made out to be either 3-3.5/5

Some scenes are worse than others too, but the sound makes up for any short-comings I think

I also bought it and it looks pretty good on a 42" LCD. The problems associated with the transfer rear their ugly heads with larger displays. I wouldn't pay too much attention to the online "experts." It may not be perfect but it is hardly as bad as they would have you believe. If you don't already own it. It's worth a purchase.

I have a 60" and thought it looked fine. again, not pristine, but not horrible either

Looks like I'm going to be in the minority here, out of the 100+ discs I have, GONY is probably the worst. I absolutely can't stand it when people say "this is no better than an upconverted DVD," because usually that is a drastic overstatement. Gangs of New York is the only disc I've seen where that was my impression throughout. It isn't that the disc is missing detail, and it may be a perfect recreation of whatever master they're using, but that's the problem. The master is from the same atrocious DVD from years ago, with all the edge enhancement and other uglies that are constant throughout. In a way, it IS like watching an upconverted DVD, in that an upconverted DVD will amplify a troubled disc's flaws, and that is certainly happening on this Blu-ray.

If you're a fan of the film, buy it. It can be found fairly inexpensively. I didn't own the DVD, so I don't totally regret the purchase. But, it is the worst of all my discs.

It looked just fine to me, i really enjoyed it..... my tv is a 40 inch sony xbr5. I have heard that the picture looks bad on larger lcds but i havent actually seen the movie on a tv bigger than mine so i can not be forsure, but it looks just fine to me on my set/not the best but not as bad as i have read either.

hmm well i have a 32 inch samsung. So the thing about bigger tv's isn't really a problem for me
