I am a novice and a very basic question. I thought that with a HDTV set to 16:9, any widescreen movie (on bluray) will occupy the entire diaplay. But no. All widescreen movies still show margins on top and bottom (I have Samsung LN52A750 and Sony BDP-S300).
What am i missing? And if this is how it issupposed to be, then am I not wasting money by buying a larger screen TV if the movies are not going to use all of it? Thank you. Bobby |

In simple terms...it all depends on how the director filmed the film. Take Spielberg for instance. He filmed Jurassic Park in 1:85 ratio...on a regular standard tv resolution 480...it will have bars. On a 16:9 it will take up the entire screen. Of course it isn't out yet on Blu but that's what we'll get whenever that time will be.
Jaws was filmed in 2:35 so you'll see the bars. Why do they do that? Preference...I heard he wanted Jaws in 2:35 to get a wide shot of how big the ocean was...JP - 1:85 so the dinosaurs looked bigger. |

![]() Still though, Black bars will be here forever.. but i really couldn't care less. Once you start the movie, you dont even notice the things. And the argument about "I paid for <x> inces of a TV, and i wanna use all of them!" is pretty flawed. If you really hate it that much, then stretch the image and maxe it terrible and un-watchable. And if you dont want to do that, then... Deal with it. ![]() of corse, you could always get an HD projector and just project it onto whatever you're prjecting it on SLIGHTLY larger to kind of rule out the "black bars being there" cocept... |
