The disc is a bit pricey ($27.95 the last time I checked at Amazon), but it's a new release.

The image quality on the disc is really good. Rented it a few days ago. Don't know if Paramount ported over the same video encode from the HD-DVD version or created a new one.

It's a good movie (was even better seen in Real-D digital 3D in movie theaters). My only complaint is the faces on many of the characters look lifeless at times. It's very difficult to animate a realistic human face and make it look "alive" and have personality. That's one reason why many CG animated movies have cartoon-like abstractions of people rather than making them look realistic. At least Beowulf does the job better than The Polar Express.

Its eyecandy, i would rent it, to see if you like it. As stated its still holding release price, even used on half and amazon sellers are looking to get near new value. I picked up the hddvd version when it first came out for 10bux but will eventually replace when it comes down in price.

First time I saw it (on DVD), I thought it was OK. Watched it again on Blu and LOVED it. Great movie with great performances especially from Winstone, Glover, and Jolie. I'd definitely recommend it. Plus the PQ and AQ are UNBELIEVABLE!

As great as the PQ was on this one, I couldn't help but feel I would have liked it better had it been live action and not CGI. I mean that in a positive way because the CGI is good enough that it really made me wish they used live actors. I passed on it for that reason, but I might pick it up on a sale or if/when the price drops.

I bought it completely blind and loved it.

I have only watched it once so far, but I will definitely enjoy it again.

Grendal is DISGUSTING.

A bit too bloody for kids - this is more of an adult Comp' animation title. Most of it is quite dark but the last few scenes are in daylight and they're great for demo (dragon battle scenes).

Actually I rented it and just finished watching it. It wasn't bad at all. It wasn't the greatest film either tho. It would have been better if it was live and more if there was more action. I must say that the pq was amazing, stunning.

300 is a live action movie filmed using "digital backlot" techniques, similar to how Sin City and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow were made. The actors perform in large studios covered in green screen. Many of the sets and other stuff is CGI and composited into the shots.

Beowulf is entirely CGI. No live action. But a lot of motion capture is used. Some of the characters look like the actual real life actors who provide the voices. Grendal's mother looks kind of like Angelina Jolie. Hrothgar looks like Anthony Hopkins. Wiglaf looks a little like Brendan Gleeson. On the other hand, the title character Beowulf is in much better physical shape than Ray Winstone.

I visited the DVD File website and saw a review of Beowulf there. The reviewer, Dan Ramer, gave Beowulf "a rare perfect score" on its video quality. He said the limitations of the previous HD-DVD version are gone and he observed bit rates peaking at 49 million bits per second. That certainly sounds like the previous HD-DVD video encode has been discarded for a different, superior AVC job.

YES! Get this movie! I just saw it and am so amazed at it! I disagree to the idea that this should have been live action. By keeping this animated, certain characters, such as Beowulf, could be unique and not look like any actor, the visuals flow better, they had more control over every aspect of the film, and could do the outrageous things they did throughout the film without using stunt men and cg and all that. i feel this movie is best told in animation, especially with this hyper realistic medium.
You should watch the extras, as they show you all about how this was made and who plays what rolls. The actor who plays Beowulf is not the 6'3" body builder we see on screen, but is a 5'6" slightly plum theatrical actor who did the voice AND the body acting.

I hope they make more movies like this one.
