Default Top Gun on BD (audio issue)

What is up with the Dolby True HD 5.1 track on this disc? I have to turn my Onkyo 605 past my max volume (80) to even get it close to sounding the same as the dts hd-ma 6.1 track.
i can run the dts track at a volume of 70 for loud goodness, but the true hd volume is waaaaaaaay quiet at 70. i literally had to turn it up to 87 on the true hd track to have it sound the same as the dts. even then the wide soundstage wasn't there or the LFE extension...

anyone else experience the same issue?

I'm glad you mentioned the LFE. I thought something seemed different about this than I remember for the laser disc version. I remember the jet exhaust sounds having more weight in the bass, than what I am observing with either lossless soundtrack on br. On the br, it seems only the music has the powerful bass. It's kind of a letdown, imo. Maybe this is another incidence of bass getting routed in a weird way to/from that .1 channel, depending on how the playback system is setup?

To this day, I still wonder if this was an issue for the Die Hard2 soundtrack. Bass effects are pretty much castrated for the entire movie.

LFE is fine with the afterburners, sound effects, etc. using the DTS hd-ma track, the dolby true hd is fubared though. is this what you experienced?

The TrueHD is fine. It's at reference level. It's the DTS 6.1 mix that's been squashed to the point of distortion through a hard-ceiling limiter. That would account for the extreem difference in volume between the two mixes.

Either soundtrack has bass-less afterburners for me. I really do think there is an issue with improper effects channel/mains channels mapping on some titles, these days. ...or maybe they are doing something silly like mapping all bass to the effects channel in the master, itself...who knows. It just really bugs me, because it is not like 5.1 encoding/decoding is a brand new thing to figure out. It's [full, bombastic soundtracks] been done quite fine for almost a decade on dvd, yet just because lossless is on the scene, it's like they are learning things from ground zero all over, again.

(I also do notice the mismatched level between the lossless THD and DTS soundtracks.)
