As much I love the name, HD-DVD, they still have little in terms of substance. Will movie makers want to wait for them to play catch up because of the catchy name?
Sure, the discs are compatible with existing developers, but the blu-ray guys are already making their discs for the same money, or less than HD-DVD. Once the cost issue is moot, everyone should jump the band wagon with Tri-star and go blu-ray. I think they want their movies in high definition MORE than we do. "Now available on blu-ray disc....Lord of the Rings...." Aside from backwards compatibility, blu-ray is a bit more "future compatible" because of the capacity. We can still have our movie and all the extras we never watch anyways. :P Heck, maybe the IEEE standards commitee will make blu-ray the standard, and HD-DVD the name. (Let me dream.) But the industry still has not learned that lesson of standardization. Theywant to be first, at any cost. Perhaps these new technologies should go THROUGH IEEE instead of meeting approval afterwards. Quicker to market, less arguements and fewer law suits. Let's not do things half-assed only to try to fix the problem 5 or 10 years down the road with ANOTHER new standard. Don't piss us off like that. Spend the money and do it right the first time for the sake of longevity. It is taking a LONG time to out pace VHS because of market share and longevity of it's existence. Remember, the company that fails to innovate, litigates. |
