United Kingdom Runaway Train (1985) - July 22nd

Runaway Train Blu-ray

Runaway Train Dual Format Blu-ray & DVD

DESPERATE AND DETERMINED TO SURVIVE

Two convicts break out of Stonehaven Prison in the dead of winter, boarding a freight train with the intention of getting as far away as possible before their notoriously sadistic warden finds out. But the brakes fail and the driver has a heart attack, sending hundreds of tons of metal hurtling through the snowy Alaskan wastes at terrifying and unstoppable speed.

Based on a script by Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samurai), with hardboiled prison slang added by real-life ex-con Edward Bunker (Mr Blue in Reservoir Dogs), this riveting thriller also boasts Oscar-nominated performances from Jon Voight and Eric Roberts – with Voight playing spectacularly against type as a criminal so vicious that he served much of his sentence welded into his cell.

Combining electrifying action with constant psychological tension (the only surviving member of the train crew is a young, inexperienced woman), Runaway Train is one of cinema's great thrill-rides.

Special Features:
- High Definition transfer of the film prepared by MGM for the Cannes Film Festival premiere
- High Definition Blu-ray and Standard Definition DVD presentation of the film
- Optional English SDH Subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
- From Thespian to Fugitive – Star Jon Voight shares his memories of his Academy Award-nominated role
- Running on Empty – An Interview with director Andrei Konchalovsky
- The Calm Before the Chaos – Co-star Kyle T. Heffner remembers Runaway Train
- Booklet featuring new writing on the film and a new interview with Runaway Train’s Production Designer Stephen Marsh conducted by Calum Waddell, illustrated with rare behind-the-scenes production images

Oh hell's yeah! One of my 80's faves. One of Danny Trejo's first films as well, he plays the boxer that gets beat by Eric Roberts.

I'll get this since it's been on my Blu-ray wish list forever but I think it's a shame that Shout didn't grab it themselves. I know it's region B-locked so a Region 1 release could still happen but this should've been among the first titles released on the format. It's such a great film.

Carlotta Films has the rights to RT in France and are giving it a limited theatrical release in cinemas this summer, but still no word on a Blu from them, but they also region lock their Blu's as well.

Since Shout Factory passed on RT, I can only hope for Criterion to get this out here stateside, considering it was originally written by Kurosawa and has a lot in common with The Wages Of Fear rather than the films its usually compared to (like Speed and Unstoppable). However, I don't think Criterion is dealing with MGM at the moment.

Also, I'm praying thus is the uncut version with the original opening credits and the missing shot restored. Most DVDs available are cut with the exception of the Aussie R4 dvd which is the original theatrical cut (and also the only dvd that was anamorphic). So, I'm holding on to the dvd in case the Blu is cut.

Nice to see some new features though! Too bad they didn't include some of the deleted scenes, like the evacuation sequence and the extended scenes giving more explanation as to the cause of the engineer's heart attack.

Also, here is a link to Stephen Marsh's production photos that will more than likely be in the booklet:

Good news. Being a huge Kurosawa fan, I sought it out many years ago, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I'd prefer a US release, but I might just get this day 1.

The music at the end is so haunting and I love the quote from Shakespeare's Richard III, "No beast so fierce......"

An amazing film.

I remember having mixed feelings about this. As an action film it's well made and often tense, but I never understood why this film went on to get "arthouse credibility", unlike most Cannon produced action movies ; I thought Voight and Roberts gave shockingly hammy performances, considering they were both Oscar nominated.

Couldn't disagree more. They were both outstanding.

@tripp66,
I had no idea there were deleted/extended scenes available...shame they didn't include it.

Once again the reviews on this site mention "Region-Free PS3"...

When it comes to reading blu-rays, there is no such thing as a native Region-Free PS3. To do so you have to flash the machine, and that is illegal.

A respectable site mentioning and advising illegal stuff.

Might as well change the review to: "Therefore, you must have a native Region-B or a flashed PS3 or SA in order to access its content).
