Default Projectors safe for games?

I am currently trying to buy my first house. One of the things I am looking forward to most is building my own home theater in a basement. I want to go with a 1080p front projectior. Is it safe to play my PS3 games on a projector at all? Are there any certain kinds of projector I need to be safe? Finally, can anybody recommend a good projector for me? Being able to play my PS3 games is a must. I just want to be safe before I spend a bunch of money on a new projector. Thanks in advance.

I can understand your desire to want to play PS3 games on as big a screen as possible. After playing Resistance Fall of Man, every time I went to the Cinema, I considered how awesome it would be to play on a 100 foot screen or whatever size it was in the theater.

I really think sometimes you can get too big a screen for games. I know its a personal preference, but I prefer a small LCD 32-40" for gaming. I hope someone here more knowledgeable than me can answer your question, because I am interested in finding a good projector for both games and blu-ray playback.

Are you worried about burn in? I don't know about projecters so I can't be 100% sure but thinking about it in my head I can see no possible way to cause burn in on a projecter. I would write some magazies that review projector and ask them, because I would hate for you to take my word for it and end up with a HUD on your $ 5,000 projector.

I have an infocus in72 and a 106" screen and I play resistance fall of man on it, and I am blown away by it. I was just recently able to get my projector hooked up again after several months of not having it because of a move. In the meantime I was using my ps3 on my 24" computer monitor and let me tell you, the difference is unbelievable. I have had no problems what so ever on my projector with games. My thoughts, go for it! As far as recommendations for a projector, if I could afford it, I would go for the epson 1080 ub pro cinema. Cosmetically it is sexy as hell, and my brother in law has just gotten one and he says its awesome. I can't wait to go over to his house and check it out. It is my dream projector after reading about it and drooling over it for the last several months. I can't wait to see it in action and drool over it for real. To be honest after buying my first projector over a year ago, I will never go back to tvs. Once again I have to say, go for it!

The only thing to take into consideration with the projector is bulb life..... if you're one of these 30-40 hour a week gamers, you'll eat bulbs pretty quickly, but there is no concern for "burn in" you're just casting an image onto a screen, it's not like LCD/Plasma.

I'll second Beta Man's comment on the bulb life, but for me replacing a bulb every so often is worth the experience.

Also, there are people (mostly in marketing I'd think) that seem to think "burn in" can be an issue with an LCD projector, but as noted above, it's VERY minor, and should not be an issue, even for an extreme gamer.

As for suggestions, I always put these two forward:

For a room with complete light control (and what I use): Sanyo PLV-Z2000

For a room with some ambient light: Panasonic PT-AE2000U

Thanks for all your input guys. Perhaps I should have been more specific. Burn-in was what I was concerned about. I noticed that the first page inside the instruction booklet of PS3 games says not to connect your PS3 to a projector unless it is a type that can handle games. Anybody know of any types that cannot handle games? LCD, DLP, SXRD, etc?

Who reads the instructions?!

I never even thought about any kind of side effects of this. You might have to end up emailing a couple projector companies and ask them.

They are covering their asses. If a projector can handle movies in 1080/720, it can handle games.

The reason they put it there is because games can move quickly so for older LCDs (like really old) you will see shadowing.

If you are really worried, go to a local store that has a projector set up (does not need to be the one you wanted to get) and bring your PS3 to test out a game.

Any projector you buy now will handle games.

The kind that don't handle games well weigh about 200 lbs. Have red, blue and green guns on them, and have fixed zoom/focus.

you're A-Ok.

Almost sounds like you're describing my projector. It's a CRT Front projector, has red, blue and green guns, weighs about 200 lbs but it does not have fixed zoom/focus.

Anyway,.. I play games on my CRT FP. To hell with burn in. I put about 2000 hours on my tubes since replacing them with new tubes direct from Sony 2 years ago. Recently I had the lenses off for cleaning and the tubes still look like new.

If I ever see burn in... I'll use that as a excuse to buy a Sxrd front projector if they are still available or whatever new technology has replaced them.

-Brian

Edit-> I don't game much anyway but checking out the demos from PS Store while the projector warms up is fun from time to time.

I use my PS3 for occasional gaming on my Epson Powerlite Home 1080P. It looks awesome on my 102" screen. As others have mentioned, no need to worry about burn-in unless you have a CRT projector.

The big thing to consider is the cost. If you're big into gaming it will be much more expensive to play your games on a front projector. For the Epson, if you consider the average bulb life of 2000-3000 hours and the cost of a bulb to be around $350, that comes out to be between $.11-.18 per hour of use. Just something to consider. No other issues that I know of.
