Is a Blu-Ray burner worth it? - Blu-ray Forum

Just wondering for all the peeps that have them on there computers are they worth having and should I consider having one on my new computer. Just wondering about the cost and all the factors that go into having one.

Well if you need to burn lots of data onto a disk and don't want to use multiple DVDs, then I'd say it's worth it for you.

If you don't need a BD burner...then it's pretty obvious that it wouldn't be worht it.

well i found my burner brilliant as i have all 6 episodes of star wars off the computer that i was able to burn off onto BD, but i still think there over priced

This may be a stupid question but you can burn Blu-Ray movies right..? Also how much do BD's blank cd's run.? The only thing I dont like about that is you dont have a case with the cover to show it off...

Uhm... yes!

As for blank discs, at $39.99 for a 5 pack of 25GB BD-R, even with $4.98 shipping, that comes to just under $9.00 each.

I thought BD movies had some sort of watermark or security that was suppose to prevent burning?

Yea I know, tell that to the OP, but I was just saying I had heard you couldn't burn a movie, even if it's one you own (which is perfectly legal) but thanks I'll try google myself maybe I heard wrong.

You can burn home movies and things like that...but movies that are copyright protected cannot be copied.

While were talking about it, Ive always wondered: If you have a computer that has a tv turner (to record TV to your computer), can you burn the shows on a BD, then watch it on your blu-ray? I know I used to record shows on my computer, and I burned it on a DVD-R, then watched it on a DVD player, so im wondering if you can do this with blu-ray?

You shouldn't have a problem doing this. I don't know of the legalities of doing that with a broadcast TV show...but I'd imagine it's OK since it's pretty much the same thing as a DVR.

You can burn your own movies, but if you want to burn to the same quality as professional Blu-ray disks, then the cost of the burner is the least of your concerns.

For example, just to purchase a high quality H.264 codec, you will probably spend a couple of grand. The video renderers included with $100 consumer products are of low quality, limited in maximum bitrates, and often do not allow for full resolution. And this is just one of many expenses.

Yes!

Sony even has a couple VAIO laptops with a Cable Card tuner that you can record HD(like HBO HD/Showtime HD/ etc), and since it has a BD burner, I don't see why not.

I wish I had that HD tuner integrated in my AR-. I had an external DVR device for my HP notebook...but I fed the trashcan with it since it won't do HD.

Oh well...one of these days I'll actually by a HD DVR for my DirecTV

Awesome! Ive always wondered, because people keep talking how they want Blu-Ray Recorders, but I guess for now, you have to settle for a PC BD burner. Why is this not talked about so often from people that want to record their fav. shows on a BD?

The HD tuner comes in a separate box that connects to the laptop via a USB port. You watch and record TV via Windows Media Center (or whatever is its new name under Vista).

No idea.
SDTV is still burnable on a BD, anything really can be burned to a BD... it's getting the source to the HDD of a BD burning PC.
Thing is, the players out now may noy be able to digest the burned discs - but our PCs can!

And, since our PCs(some of our PCs that is) do have connections for external displays(like a HDTV), makes it kinda cool!

SD, I would imagine, burned to a BD, would get you quite a few hours of playback with the right setup/software.
You may/will have to copy over to HDD from the BD all the stored TV shows then play from HDD... oh well!

If you XviD the shows - Geez! Whole seasons on one disc!

Yes, still Windows Media Center.

With third party software, you can take recorded TV shows from WMC and save them as - whatever!
